A few weeks ago, the global media hailed “MOTOMAMI” as one of the most anticipated albums of 2022. After an intense three-year creative process filled with incredible attention to detail, Rosalía has delivered fans an unconventional album that seeks to blur the lines between cultures, genres, gender roles and more. It is a deeply personal, modern musical self-portrait of a strong and courageous young woman.
Rosalia on “MOTOMAMI”: This is my most personal album
– Everything on this album was made from scratch. Conceptually, lyrically, this is the most personal album I have ever made, says Rosalia in Rolling Stone magazine. – In my head “MOTOMAMI” makes sense as a self-portrait of a female figure that is being built … [i] there is duality in it. The disc has a binary structure, these are two types of contrasting energy. “Moto” means “strong” and refers to aggression, while “Mami” refers to fragility … There is no shortage of humor and irony here.
“MOTOMAMI”, produced by Rosalia, features 16 tracks including the recently released “HENTAI”, “CHICKEN TERIYAKI”, “SAOKO” and “LA FAMA” featuring The Weeknda. The latter song peaked at # 1 in the Spanish charts and spent three weeks at # 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs. On the other hand, “SAOKO” immediately reached the 40th place on the Global Spotify Chart and the second place on the Spanish Spotify list – this is the biggest solo debut of the Spanish artist in the history of the global list on the platform.
To celebrate the album’s premiere, Rosalía gifted fans with another eye-catching music video – this time for the song “CANDY”. The singer indulges in her favorite entertainment in the clip, which is karaoke.
After an intense period of work on the album, the Spanish artist entered the mode of celebrating together with the fans. On the night from Friday to Saturday, she organized a one-of-a-kind show via TikTok LIVE. Rosalia attracted a huge audience and performed 14 songs with “MOTOMAMI”, giving each song a distinct character and visuals. The event was directed by Stillz, and all the impressive footage was filmed exclusively on smartphones.
Additionally, before the premiere, Rosalia made her first appearance on “Saturday Night Live”. The artist is the first woman in the 47-year history of “SNL” to perform both songs entirely in Spanish. Before appearing in the famous NBC comedy show, Rosalía was a guest of “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, to whom she told not only about her latest music project, but also about how Harry Styles accidentally texted her old phone number.
