Expectation for 50 years of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra

This year is special for the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra (CSOs). On November 10 it will celebrate its first five decades of foundation and several presentations are already planned on its agenda to celebrate the anniversary.

In these five decades their instruments have sounded in different spaces, such as prisons, vaccination centers or theaters, in which they have brought academic music closer to citizens, a process that its new executive director wants to maintain and reinforce, Fernando Vargas.

Rescuing national repertoire, goal of Cuenca Symphony

The CSO was born through Supreme Decree 1260 and from that moment on it has become an important space for the promotion, creation, conservation and rescue of the national and universal symphonic heritage. In this journey, the musical direction has been in the hands of several academics, but the one that Vargas stands out is the teacher José Castellví Queralt, an Ecuadorian-nationalized Spanish professor who founded the OSC in 1972.

Although the programming is progressing in accordance with what is established for the 2022 season, Vargas hopes that in the coming November there will be a great musical party, he thinks of something outdoors, with guests and a large public, of course, as long as the pandemic for the COVID-19 allows it.

But until that day comes, the approach is to bring musicians closer to places other than theater, such as rural parishes, with educational concerts for children or popular chords, so that the population values the roots of the national staff even more. It also seeks to satisfy an audience that, according to what he said, is inevitable at weekly concerts, referring to foreigners, Europeans or Americans who reside in Cuenca for certain seasons or have made the city their new home.

Positioning the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra on the international stage is the objective of the new director, Augusto Carrión

Vargas is also an artist, he sang with the OSC for several years and at different stages, and now that he leads the administrative team, one of his goals is to increase the number of musicians, which, according to what he said, has been decimated over the years due to pensions, with the aggravating circumstance of not having a budget item that allows you to replace the places. They currently have 54 instrumentalists and for the next few months their management will focus on increasing to at least 64.

Another aspect to be reinforced is the virtual presentations, live or deferred, which emerged thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Element that he prefers to see as an advantage, because it allows exhibiting the work to other geographies, beyond a specific space.

Until now the OSC has recorded four compact discs of select music with works by renowned Ecuadorian composers and arrangers. Since February 2021, its principal director is the teacher Augusto Carrión Rodas. (I)
