Ronan McHugh, a longtime associate of the band, is responsible for the production of the material. The release will fill 15 completely new tracks that have been created in the last two years. Diamond Star Halos will be available just three weeks before the band’s US tour, which has sold over a million tickets.
Def Leppard didn’t want to do a here and now CD. “We’ve made a great album”
It started with the exchange of ideas in a remote edition typical of a pandemic. Vocalist Joe Elliott has been in Ireland, bassist Rick Savage in England, and guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell and drummer Rick Allen in the United States. – We have always tried to create music that would improve people’s mood, the frontman notes. – We want to cut ourselves off from politics, from everything that is happening in the world and with which we have to struggle.
That was the main idea of ”Diamond Star Halos”. “We didn’t want to make a CD about the here and now,” continues Elliott. – We just wanted to record a classic album. End of discussion. Still, we are rediscovering ourselves. Many artists stop growing, but not us.
Among their musical inspirations, the artists mention David Bowie, T. Rex and Mott The Hoople, i.e. artists who were passionate about Def Leppard’s members when they were kids. – The title was taken from the text “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” by T.Rex – explains the singer. – There is the line “You’ve got a hub cap diamond star halo”.
For the first single Def Leppard they chose the explosive song “Kick”. “It’s about someone you can’t stop thinking about,” explains Phil. – It’s a cool number obsessed with the other person; an obsession that can take over your life. Musically, it sounds as if we have matured.
The set also includes the stadium anthem “Fire It Up”, co-created by Sam Hollander (Panic! At The Disco, Weezer). In addition, Mike Garson, known for his collaboration with David Bowie, played the piano in the songs “Goodbye For Good This Time” and the epic “Angels (Can’t Help You Now)”. – We got to know his music when we were 13 years old. Now he has added a lot of color to our recordings, admitted Joe.
Garson is not the only guest on Diamond Star Halos. Alison Krauss can be heard on “Lifeless” and “This Guitar”. “She liked both songs a lot and she didn’t know which one to choose, so we decided she would sing in both,” Joe cheated. – She is absolutely my favorite country singer.
“I think we made an excellent record,” concludes Joe. – We’re not kids anymore. – “Diamond Star Halos” makes sense to us, our audience and the world. This is the album that defines us.
