DreamWorks Animation proposes two animated films for this year. One is the sequel to The cat with boots, which will be released in September, and the other is the bad guys, film that portrays the misadventures of a criminal gang in a world of anthropomorphic animals, which arrives in Ecuadorian theaters today, Thursday, March 17.
the bad guys is directed by the French Pierre Perifel (animator of animated films Kung Fu Panda, Shrek, Rise of the Guardians), who makes his feature film directorial debut. While the script is in charge of Etan Cohen – who also wrote Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Men in Black 3- and Hilary Winston, who adapted the successful children’s graphic books scholastic, by Australian Aaron Blabey, with sales of over 8.2 million copies in print worldwide.
The film, distributed by Universal Pictures, takes place in a world where humans and anthropomorphic animals coexist. There, after a lifetime of legendary heists, a gang of criminal animals known as Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Mrs. Tarantula are finally captured. To avoid a prison sentence, the animal outlaws must pull off their most challenging con yet: become model citizens. Under the tutelage of their mentor, Professor Marmalade, an arrogant but lovable guinea pig, the dubious gang sets out to fool the world that they’re getting good. However, after a while, Mr. Lobo begins to suspect that being good may bring him what he has always wanted: to be accepted. And then a new baddie appears to threaten the town… Can Mr. Lobo persuade the rest of the gang to stand up to him and really become… the good guys?
This is DreamWorks Animation’s first original feature film of the 2020s. The main characters have great visual appeal, but the story is also interesting.
“The biggest challenge of the film, coming from a book, was keeping the message intact, exposing the desire for change and improvement in a person. If you knew the book, you stay with the essence. If you didn’t know the book, it brings you to a very human and fun experience,” said producer Damon Ross, in a YouTube interview.
“Sometimes you can make bad decisions, or be different, or be wrong, and that doesn’t define you. There will be times to think that you can go to the other side if you are on the wrong side.Perifel told Hollywood Reporter.
Aaron Blabey gave an interview to New York Times in which he talks about adapting his books into an animated film. “It is my love letter to cinema, in many ways. I wanted to take all the things that I loved as a kid… I mean, these characters were all iterations of creations that have been in my psyche since I was just a kid. It’s the culmination of everything I love about action movies.”
The Australian writer also commented that it was a challenge to find the right tone so that the film was suitable for children and of course, that it also pleases adults. “My original submission for this was like a film ‘Tarantino for children’, and that opened up a whole new space to work. Because I love that territory so much, it was incredibly easy for me to work on it. The challenge was finding filmmakers who understood that and were able to build on it. It very well could have been too childish or too sophisticated, but the producers managed to strike a balance so that children enjoy the animated adventure, but also adults enjoy everything else.”

Characters
With codenames clearly inspired by the simplistic names of Reservoir Dogs, the bad guys is a fun homage to heist movies throughout movie history. Learn about the five main characters in the film:
Mr. Wolf (Mr. Wolf)
He is the main character and leader of the film, using his charm and personality to pull off heists and evade the authorities. He is the team’s pickpocket and peacekeeper, often breaking up fights between Mr. Shark and Mr. Snake. Mr. Wolf also makes most of the decisions for the team, finding missions and deciding how they will play out. This character is always there to lead his team and earn some money.
Mr. Snake (Mr. Snake)
Known as the “serpentine safe-cracking machine,” he is an expert at getting into places he shouldn’t be and escaping from trouble. He often sports a red tropical shirt, a style that seems to be becoming more and more popular among villains. He also has a huge appetite for money or anything really. Snake is constantly trying to eat something, as can be seen when he spits out the hamster in the trailer. He is incredibly selfish, which often gets him into conflict with Mr. Shark. Mr. Snake’s personality seems to be as big as his stomach, and he is sure to be the center of attention in The Bad Guys.

Ms. Tarantula (Mrs. Tarantula)
She is the technological wizard of the gang, with her eight arms she manages to be an experienced computer hacker. Although she admits that most of her knowledge comes from YouTube, she is a vital part of the team, as she keeps the gang safe and wherever she needs to be.
Mr. Piranha (Mr. Piranha)
He is the wild card of the group, but his fame has transcended thanks to his bravery. In the books, Piranha is literally a fish, which causes him to have trouble moving. However, in the movie he anthropomorphizes it a bit more, giving it legs. One of his character traits in the books is his love of burritos. He loves being a villain, always sporting a big toothy smile while he’s with the crew.
Mr. Shark (Mr. Shark)
Although he is the largest member of the group, he is actually a master of disguise. The character made a name for himself thanks to an incredible heist: stealing the Mona Lisa while dressed as the Mona Lisa. He is now a member of Wolf’s crew and uses Wolf’s abilities to help the team blend in with the crowd. He often scares those around him, so he is happy to have found a group of like-minded people who accept him for who he is, meaning he no longer has to hide how he feels.
