Paul Wesley gained popularity thanks to the famous series “Vampire Diaries”, where, and how, he played the vampire Stefan. Thousands of viewers know him under the American surname, but Wesley’s real name is PaweÅ‚ Tomasz Wasilewski. He was born in the USA, but his Polish parents made sure that he spoke Polish well. He often visited his grandparents in Poland, he was also here for work – e.g. in 2018 at the Warsaw Comic-Con or the Transatlantyk festival organized by AP Kaczmarek. He was the ambassador of the first edition, organized in 2011. The actor talks about his Polish origin many times in interviews. Apart from being an actor, he is also involved in film directing and production.
Paul Wesley will play the iconic Captain Kirk
Star Trek is one of pop culture’s most iconic science-fiction franchises. It is based on a fictional universe created in the 1960s by Gene Roddenbery – the action was set in the 21st century: at this stage, mankind has got rid of stereotypes, sexism, disease, and the poverty of wars, and has achieved such a high development that it can focus exploring space in search of new planets and worlds as part of the United Federation of Planets. As part of the franchise, several cult series (including animated ones), over a dozen full-length films, countless books and comics were created.
The series, although entertaining, focused on current social problems such as: human rights, the issue of ethnic minorities, stereotypes, racism, feminism, authoritarianism, morality, loyalty, war, imperialism, economy and social assistance. Roddenberry wrote scripts and characters to show that humanity can grow, learn from its mistakes, and change for the better. He also insisted that the cast of the show should be ethnically diverse, which was extremely difficult to push through in the 1960s.
The first “Star Trek” television premiered in 1966 and focused on the crew of the spacecraft Enterprise, captained by James T. Kirk, played by Canadian actor William Shatner. The character in his interpretation has become a cult and it is in his shoes that Paul Wesley must now enter in the latest series “Star Trek. Strange New Worlds” –
Star Trek showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with producer Alex Kurtzman, highlight:
Paul is a gifted actor, his refreshing presence will be an important draw to the show. As much as we are, he’s a lifelong fan of Star Trek and we’re all very excited about his interpretation of this sleek character
– reports the Deadline portal. Meanwhile, the actor himself writes:
I am deeply honored and still a little intimidated that I have been given the honor of playing the inimitable James T. Kirk. Since I was a little child, the world created by Gene Roddenberry captivated me. Recently, when I boarded a nearly empty plane to Los Angeles, I discovered that only me and William Shatnere, who had just come back from the stars, were on board. I could barely say anything, but I said hi and we chatted a bit.
I’m not a man who believes in things like destiny, but this was more than mere coincidence. Of course I had to take a picture with him. Thank you, Mr. Shatner for the nice company. (…) I can’t wait for you all to see Captain Kirk on the screens.
The action of the first season, which will be released in May this year, focuses on young Captain Christopher Pike, Spock’s science officer and First Officer. They explore more galaxies before Captain Kirk takes control of the Enterprise – Wesley will not appear until the second season. It will undoubtedly be a great entrance. However, Paramount has already shown a picture of him in a Starfleet uniform.
The cast also includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn / Una Chin-Riley, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun.
Wesley could be seen before, among others in “Fallen Angels”, “Oodie Brothers”, “Strength of Peace” or “The Russell’s Daughter”. He also appeared in Agnieszka Holland’s “Shot to the Heart”. Recently, he appeared in the series “Tell me a fairy tale”, which can be seen on HBO GO. He has directed episodes of series such as “Roswell”, “New Mexico”, “Shadowhunters” and “Legacies”.
