I am writing about it today for a reason. On March 14, we celebrate Pi Day. Why just today? The American date notation corresponds to the first digits of pi (ie 3.14). The celebration began in 1988 with the aim of the entire initiative to promote mathematics. The Letter Pi Day is not particularly popular with us, two days earlier (March 12) we celebrated the Mathematics Day ourselves. All of this together creates a great opportunity to talk about books that try to disenchant this disliked school subject.
“Five Doors, or Weird Maths”, MickaĆ«l Launay
Mathematics surrounds us, and probably no one has the slightest illusion about it. But can it be interesting? The author of this book shows that it is possible! This effect is achieved by combining mathematical concepts with something completely everyday. He explains difficult concepts and introduces them with interesting facts. Lessons with him would not be boring.
Pi times an eye, Matt Parker
Did you have a miscalculation? Sometimes such a mistake results in a two, and other times … a swinging bridge. Pi Times Eye is a book in which the effects of sometimes very minor errors in calculations are presented in an interesting way. The publisher calls the title “a comedy of mathematical errors,” and that’s what it is. The book is a collection of situations where you had to check the results (to be sure) several times.
Why do we need math, Ian Stewart
How can mathematics help us, since everything is counted by computers, telephones or, as a last resort, calculators? As it turns out, in many things, especially in understanding our reality. Mathematics rules our life, determines the presidential elections, or is responsible for the operation of the computer. This title is a perfect proposition for anyone who likes to know more about seemingly obvious topics.
