Zinemaldia will not veto Russian filmmakers

The Zinemaldia of San Sebastian has published a note on the war in Ukraine. First of all, the film festival condemned “Russia’s intolerable aggression against Ukraine” and expressed its solidarity with the Ukrainian population.

On the other hand, faced with the campaign of some festivals and cultural spaces against Russian creators, the festival states that “our selection processes evaluate the cinematographic works individually, never based on the nationality to which they belong, even when come from countries with governments that violate fundamental rights and we will continue to do so in these troubled times”.

“We cannot hold the citizens of a country responsible for the decisions of their governments. On many occasions, as is the case with the thousands of Russian citizens who are demonstrating against the war, they not only disagree with the decisions of their governments, but fight against them,” they add.

For this reason, the festival is confident in its power “as the loudspeaker of dissenting voices, who seek to express themselves artistically in countries hostile to this right”, and, therefore, the Russian voices that oppose the aggression committed by their country “always ” will have a place in the Zinemaldia.

Finally, the San Sebastian film festival expresses its desire for “the reestablishment of international legality and peaceful stability in the area.”
