The material for “Dance Fever” was made in London during a pandemic as the world waited to reopen. At that time, Florence realized that she missed the most clubs, dancing and concerts. On the new album, we get Florence at its best, i.e. as a festival goddess with ravishing anthems.

Florence Welch sets off to an invigorating dance on the album “Dance Fever”

Right before the pandemic, Welch began to take an interest in St. Vitus Cathedral – a Renaissance phenomenon that consisted in the gathering of groups of dancing people. There were even hundreds of people losing themselves in dancing at the same time. The vision of such a dance reminded Florence of her experiences with dance, a discipline to which she devoted herself when she decided to live sober. She combined it with folk elements from the Middle Ages. In the last years of numbness and closure, dance gave energy, strength and allowed us to look at music from the perspective of choreography.

Work on the album began as always – with a notebook full of poems and ideas, Florence flew to New York in March 2020, where she was accompanied by Jack Antonoff in the studio. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic forced Welch to return to London. When she was sitting at home, she started remaking songs, inspired by dance music, folk, Iggy Pop from the 70s, or songs by Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris.

In London, one of the songs that underwent the greatest metamorphosis was the latest single “My Love”, which eventually helped the singer to make Dave Bayley from Glass Animals. Initially, it was a “sad poem” written in the kitchen. Later, however, there were synthesizers, a dance beat and thrilling energy. The result is a number that combines Dave’s love of the keyboards and Florence’s fascination with everything gothic and scary, or, as the artist put it, “Nick Cave who goes to the club”. The text was influenced by the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, the Gothic works of Carmen by Maria Machado and Julia Armfield and the horror films “Kult”, “The Witch: A Fairy Tale of New England” or “Midsommar. In broad daylight”.

The previous single, “Heaven is Here”, was made during the lockdown and is an attempt to capture the frustration of not being able to create. It’s two minutes and eight seconds of powerful choral singing, spiked with primal drums. The video was shot by Autumn de Wilde. The shooting took place in Kiev at the end of November 2021. As we learn from Florence’s Instagram, two of the dancers from the clip are currently in the shelter. The artist expressed her support and appealed for help for Ukraine.

On the album “Dance Fever” Florence addresses the issues of identity, masculinity and femininity. Florence Welch, Jack Antonoff and Dave Bayley are producing.
