The film “Belle” directed by Mamoru Hosoda had its world premiere at the Cannes IFF, where it received a 14-minute ovation. Who is the title character?

17-year-old Suzu, a half orphan, lives with her father in the provincial prefecture of Kochi. She abandoned singing, which was her great childhood passion, because after her mother’s death it brought back painful memories from the past. To deal with the pain of loss and a poor relationship with her father, Suzu spends more and more time online. The unhappy teen finds comfort in the virtual world of U, among 5 billion other users, where she flourishes and becomes a world-famous singer – Belle.
One day, during the concert, a mysterious figure appears in front of her, causing fear among the inhabitants of U. Like in “Beauty and the Beast”, they will be linked by an extraordinary relationship, thanks to which they will have a chance to discover who they really are. Hiding behind a virtual avatar and the need to find your own life path are extremely important topics for developing teenagers.
– I’ve always wanted to try my hand at dubbing, so I was very happy to be offered to play in “Belle”. The fact that this is the main role delighted me, but also stressed me out! – says Daria Zawiałow. – I had a double task as I had to play two main characters – Suzu and Belle. Ultimately, working in the studio gave me great joy. Jacek Kasperek, the producer and Sebastian Drożak, the director, helped me a lot. It is unbelievable that just after the premiere of my album “Wars and nights”, which was a concept album visually living in the world of anime, I got the opportunity to dub in this genre of film. This is the perfect buckle for me to close my album.
“Belle” was created in the legendary Studio Chizu (owned by Mamoru Hosody and producer Yuichiro Saito) and the Irish Cartoon Saloon. Jin Kim, one of the most outstanding artists in his profession (“Frozen”), is responsible for the appearance of the character. The design of the buildings in the virtual film world was prepared by the British architect Eric Wong. The author of the extraordinary music is Ludvig Forssell, a composer known for his cooperation with the creator of video games Hideo Kojima (“Metal Gear Solid V”).
In Poland, the anime was watched by the audience and viewers of the 8th IFF Children’s Cinema. The first official screenings will take place in March, while “Belle” will be available for wide distribution on April 1. The distributor of the title is the New Horizons Association.
