joaquin phoenix is “making history”. The 47-year-old Oscar winner was photographed Tuesday dressed as the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte on the London set of his upcoming film directed by Ridley Scottwith whom he made the film Gladiator the 2000.
When it was reported in October 2020 about the casting of Phoenix for the project, titled Napoleon and also known as kit bagthe film was described as focusing on the historical battles, Bonaparte’s ambition and strategy that made him a historical military leader.
vanessa kirby, who replaced Jodie Comer in the role, plays Bonaparte’s wife, Josephine, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. “It’s an honor to join you on this journey,” the 34-year-old Oscar nominee Kirby wrote on Instagram as she shared the news of her casting in January.
Bonaparte came to power during French Revolutionary Wars and became emperor in 1804. He was exiled to Elba in 1814, escaped and reigned as emperor again until his defeat at Waterloo in 1815. He was then exiled again to Santa Elena, where he died in 1821 at the age of 51.
Phoenix won a Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in joker 2019 and was previously nominated for his roles in gladiator, walk the tightrope and The master.
Scott, 84, directed two movies that hit theaters last year: House of Gucci and the last duel.
In January, Scott told The Hollywood Reporter what Bonaparte’s relationship with Josephine is what intrigued him to accept the project. “You have to serve the battles, the action and the sex very sparingly. Otherwise, everything becomes boring,” she told the magazine.
Scott added: “What is it about Napoleon that makes him fascinating? Very simple: a man who was one of the most powerful in history, but who depended so much on a woman.
The financing and production of the biographical film is in charge of Apple Studios.
