Netflix to introduce ads? President: Never say never

On Thursday, February 24, at 3 a.m. Polish time, Russian troops attacked Ukraine. The soldiers struck both from the ground and from the air. The Ukrainian army is resisting tough, but the situation is changing minute by minute.

Netflix CEO Spencer Neumann took part in the Media & Telecom conference organized by the Morgan Stanley bank in San Francisco. During the discussion panel, the controversial topic of introducing advertisements on already paid streaming platforms was raised. Disney + decided to take such a step as part of a cheaper subscription. When asked if it was possible that the same would happen on Netflix, Neuman joked that he would like to see people who really like it.

Will Netflix introduce ads?

“It’s not like we’ve set up a religion against advertising,” Neumann said, explaining that Netflix’s financial structure is driven more by the category of audience impressions, their choices and what’s best for creators working on future movie productions. The CEO does not rule out that perhaps the introduction of advertisements could somehow fit into this model: “Never say never” – he said during the discussion. But he also stressed that he did not see any need for changes so far:

This is not something we are currently planning. Our subscription model works very well around the world.

The president of Netflix also referred to the withdrawal from the Russian market. He noted that the war in Ukraine was a “terrible tragedy”, so further broadcasting in Russia had a very difficult “moral dimension”. The decision to suspend operations was also made due to market mechanisms, he reports

Economic restrictions imposed by the countries of the Western bloc led to the fact that both Gooogle and Apple shut down payment systems in the country, companies such as Visa and Mastercard also withdrawn their services, which made it practically impossible to download subscriptions. Added to this is the issue of local regulations imposed by the Russian media and internet control authority. According to their letter, Netflix would be required to stream propaganda TV channels.

The proceeds from the Russian market were less than one percent of Netflix’s total revenues. In 2021, the platform had 222 million users around the world.
