Colin Farrell was by no means unrecognizable as the Penguin. The inspiration of the actor from “The Godfather”

In the film, Farrell plays Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, a wounded and squat gangster from Gotham City. This mid-level criminal with the (undesirable) nickname “The Penguin” is played by the hard-to-recognize role of Colin Farrell – it took three hours to characterize him each time. It turns out that when the director – who co-wrote the script for Batman with Peter Craig – first approached Farrell with an offer to work on the project, he wanted, above all, to use the actor’s skills to show power and sensitivity in the same character.

Batman Director: What happened to Colin was amazing. I thought: Who is this guy?

In an interview with Variety, Reeves said:

He can be a mix of the unbelievable, incredibly scary and unstable, and then suddenly you would see that sensitive side that really made you feel sorry for this guy.

When they met, Reeves noticed that Farrell had recently gained weight for another film. The actor’s appearance fits perfectly with his concept of the gangster-like Penguin played by Fred John Cazale in the The Godfather movies.

Reeves asked prosthetic makeup artist Michael Marino (recently nominated for an Oscar for his work on “The Prince of New York 2”) to design the look for the Penguin. TEn adapted to the actor when Farrell stated that he was not comfortable with the extra pounds and would like to return to his previous weight.

Reeves mentions that the first time he saw the cast of Penguin’s head, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Marino assured the director that Farrell would have access to the full range of expression under the makeup and the illusion would be completely real. Reeves was still skeptical when Marino and Farrell tested makeup in New York, but after watching the video they gave him, he was finally persuaded to stay with the Marino project. What happened to Colin was amazing. I thought: Who is this guy? And Colin was so funny about it. He already spoke in the voice he uses in the movie -:

It wasn’t my intention to hire Colin to look like this. It was one of the things that evolution led us to do.

Thanks to the make-up, the actor changed so much that Jeffrey Wright did not recognize him on the set, despite the fact that the gentlemen know each other very well. One day, Colin walked onto the set and I walked past him and said, ‘Okay, what’s going on, where’s Colin? Are we filming or not? ‘ It was amazing – said the actor playing Commissioner Gordon in one of the interviews.
