Media censorship in Russia, up to 15 years in prison, threatens journalists for telling the truth

On March 4, the upper house of the Russian parliament (the Federation Council) approved a draft law previously adopted by the Duma, under which spreading false information about the activities of the Russian armed forces may result in up to 15 years in prison. Vladimir Putin expressly signed the law, and therefore entered into force.

According to the new law, “discrediting the use of armed forces” is defined as, for example, “deliberate actions aimed at undermining the authority of the Armed Forces, the image and confidence in the Armed Forces, and at diminishing their merits”. The Kremlin is actually completely censoring the transmission of true information about Russian aggression against Ukraine by journalists staying in Russia, and is trying to ensure that the Russians receive only propaganda content.

Under the law, criminal liability (a fine or up to three years in prison) may also be incurred for “calls to impose sanctions on Russia”.
