The director of the film, Bartosz Blaschke, explains that the film is about the unwavering pursuit of musical dreams in spite of the circumstances:
Grzesiek was for years a deeply deaf person, misdiagnosed, it was thought that he had autism, so nothing was done about this hearing. He lived in silence for several years. When he regained his hearing, it turned out that there was a musical talent under this deafness.
Producer of “Sonata”: We should start discussing art education for disabled people
– He had to overcome a gigantic road to achieve what he dreamed of, for example to play in the philharmonic hall – says the director and screenwriter of the film.
Marcin Kurek, the co-producer of the film, points out that the film was created out of the need to act. – We made such a cinema to show that we have to act. We have to help. For me, the biggest message was that we should start discussing arts education for people with disabilities. If we can have a runner who runs with prostheses, we might as well have an educated actor who doesn’t have toes, who doesn’t have one leg, is blind or hearing impaired. Let’s not close ourselves to the fact that we are a unified society in which everyone is great people, emphasized the co-producer of the film.
Małgorzata Foremniak: There are many, many more such Grzesias
Michał Sikorski, who plays the character of Grzegorz Płonka, points out that the film joins the manifesto of humanity. – The role is obviously a creation. Grzesiek Płonka was an inspiration, I drew a lot from him. When I heard about him, it was very close to me, says Sikorski. He adds that in retrospect, he sees that this is some version of himself. – It is an exit to the barricades and the feeling that it is an issue to be fought for – he says.
Małgorzata Foremniak, who plays the character of Małgorzata Płonka, Grzegorz’s mother, notes that the film is not only a story about a disability. – It’s not that there is a history of Grześ, he has a certain disability, he has a need to learn, he is extremely gifted. There are many, many more such Grzesias. This film entered the center of this family’s life, where the viewer may become Grzes for a moment. And to see and feel what it is like to live in a closed world, from which there is no way out, because nobody from outside wants to participate in it, doesn’t want to help – explains the actress.
Who is Grzegorz Płonka?
Grzegorz Płonka was born with numerous birth defects, and autism was also suspected. The boy met the diagnosis – “profound cerebrospinal hearing loss” – at the age of 14. Since then, he has fought for contact with the world of sound.
The film stars: Jerzy Stuhr, Małgorzata Foremniak, Łukasz Simlat and Michał Sikorski as Grzegorz Płonka. Tomasz Augustynek is the author of the photos.
The “Sonata” was awarded to the audience of the 46th Polish Film Festival. Additionally, the main role actor Michał Sikorski received an individual award for a professional acting debut.
