Oleh Sentsov: Now everyone has understood who Putin really is
In the video, Sentsov says, among others:
We will win this war because we have no other choice. I am grateful for the support from all over the world. Now everyone has understood who Putin really is and that he poses a threat not only to Ukraine, but to Europe and the whole world.
The director also expressed the hope that Putin would face a military and political defeat, and that he would face his actions before the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague.
Oleh Sentsov is a director, screenwriter, former political prisoner and political activist. The international premiere of his film debut “Gamer” took place in 2011 at the Rotterdam festival. After Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, Sentsov was arrested by the FSB, charged with planning terrorist acts, and secretly transferred to Moscow. Despite the lack of evidence, he was sentenced to 20 years in a high-security labor camp.
The global #FreeOlegSentsov campaign for his release lasted five years, in which the European and Polish Film Academy played the leading role. In prison, he wrote a novel and a collection of short stories, and from behind bars he also directed the film “Numbers” (Berlinale Special 2020) based on his own script. On September 7, 2019, Sentsov was released from a labor camp as part of an exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. After his release, the filmmaker continued his efforts to free all Ukrainian prisoners remaining in Russian prisons.
