The Government will change the name of Madrid’s Atocha station to Atocha-Almudena Grandes as part of a plan that it plans to start before the end of the year to include the names of women in the country’s main train stations. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez, during her participation in an informative meeting organized by Europa Press, a few months after the name of Chamartín (Madrid) was also changed. by that of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor.

“This is about making visible the Government’s commitment to gender equality. We will assign women’s names to the main stations in the country, in a gesture charged with symbolism to remember the names of women that history has made invisible on many occasions”, he advanced. Pedro Sánchez joined this announcement. The President of the Government has announced that “the heart of Madrid will bear the name of one of its most illustrious citizens : Puerta de Atocha Almudena Grandes Station”. For Sánchez, it is about “an acknowledgment to a writer who made the capital another protagonist of her workswho revealed to us with his stories the most intimate and sincere Madrid”.
