The Venice Biennale closes its door to artists linked to the Russian Government

The Venice Biennaleconsidered one of the most important artistic events in the world, announced today that it will not accept the participation of official delegations, institutions or personalities linked to the Russian Government for the invasion of Ukraine.

However, it will host artists who oppose Vladimir Putin’s regime, according to a statement.

“On the other hand, the Biennale rejects -as long as this situation continues- all forms of collaboration with those who have carried out or support an act of aggression of unprecedented gravity and, therefore, will not accept the presence of official delegations at its exhibitions, institutions and personalities linked to the Russian Government”warning.

Last Monday the Biennale announced that the organizers of the Russian pavilion had canceled their participation in the Art edition, which will start on April 23 (Venice alternates the Art and Architecture Biennales every year).

In this way, it is “collaborating and will collaborate in every possible way” to allow the participation of the Ukrainian delegation, despite the war that broke out seven days ago after the invasion of Russian troops.

On the other hand, the Biennale expressed its support for all the people in Russia “they are valiantly opposing the war”including artists and authors from all disciplines and who will not be denied attendance at the Venetian event.

“The Venice Biennale will not close the door to those who defend freedom of expression and protest against the abominable and unacceptable decision to attack a sovereign State and its unarmed population”highlighted in the note.

And I add: “For those who oppose the current Russian regime there will always be an egg in the Biennale exhibitions, both in those dedicated to Art, Architecture and its festivals such as Cinema, Dance, Theater or Music”.

The statement ends with a call for international diplomacy to find “briefly a shared solution” to put an end to the conflict. (I)
