On Thursday, February 24, at 3 a.m. Polish time, Russian troops attacked Ukraine. The soldiers struck both from the ground and from the air. The Ukrainian army is resisting tough, but the situation is changing minute by minute. On page l we lead
The text was published in the Wednesday (March 2, 2022) issue of the journal. Twardoch notes that the pacifist slogan “No War” (German “Kein Krieg”), often repeated in Germany, is the aftermath of the punishment for the Second World War – but it is not adequate in the current situation. “It’s been 80 years. The changed world forces a different attitude” – argues the writer.
Stop Russia at all costs
“‘No war!’ does not distinguish between victim and aggressor. “No war!” accepts what the aggressor gains through military action. “No war!” disarms a victim who is still fighting in the war, “Twardoch lists, and adds that this slogan is an insult to Ukrainians who are now fighting for their country and want to become a nation that decides its own fate. The writer emphasizes that he is not a supporter of force solutions, but in the present situation it is “not the war, but Russia must be stopped at all costs”.
He points out that Soviet and later Russian propaganda has been eagerly using the notion of pacifism for almost a hundred years to “pacify the West morally and intellectually”. He also points out that Western European disarmament supporters have never made similar demands to the Kremlin. Meanwhile, the probability of a criminal regime in Germany is unusually low. “Such a regime, however, exists now close to us, and the Germans are willing to do business with it,” notes Twardoch.
According to the writer, German pacifism turned out to be a road to nowhere in the face of the growing Russian aggression. “The thoughtless pacifism of the German political class was probably well-intentioned, but in fact it was stupid and immoral. It was immoral to spend 1.4 percent on armaments (GDP – ed.). It was immoral to act to delay in the face of overt Russian It was immoral to delay the supply of weapons to Ukraine, it was immoral to Nord Stream 2 and an energy policy that made Europe dependent on Russian fossil fuels “- Twardoch enumerates and adds that he also considers it immoral to believe that Russia must” somehow reach agreement, find a compromise over the heads of the Ukrainians. “
To nullify Russia’s supporters
Twardoch emphasizes that on February 27, 2022, he welcomed the change in Germany’s approach towards Russia, including the consent to supply Ukraine with weapons, increasing spending on armaments and the willingness to build LNG terminals. The writer calls for the recently popular “cancel culture” to be deprived of the influence and action of European supporters of Russia who “shamelessly take Russian money”, from Gerhard Schröder, to Marine Le Pen, to Viktor Orban.
He also adds that, paradoxically, he is not criticizing Germany because he is a Germanophobe, and precisely because he is full of appreciation for Poland’s western neighbors. Nevertheless, he considers Germany’s current policy towards Russia to be a “disgraceful stain” in the country’s history after 1945. The writer demands of German politicians admitting a complete mistake in their policy towards Russia. “Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Georgia were right, but not Germany or France, which traditionally sided with Russia. Jarosław Kaczyński is wrong in everything today, but his brother, President Lech Kaczyński, was right, who in 2008 said : today Georgia, tomorrow Ukraine, the day after tomorrow the Baltic states, and later maybe Poland as well, “Die Welt reads.
According to Twardoch, the only alternative to Europe in the face of Russian lawlessness are the European Union and NATO. The writer also addresses these words to Polish politicians who are busy weakening the unity of Europe. Twardoch calls for allocating more funds to armaments than Russia in order to avoid further wars and force Russia to abandon its aggressive policy and return Ukrainian territories.
“We must also – as Boris Johnson rightly pointed out – take the Russian economy down on its shoulder, so that in the end the Russians themselves get rid of the main culprit of these events, Vladimir Putin. Russia, this rogue state conquering other countries, must have its teeth and claws torn off before Kiev – will want to reach for more: Riga, Warsaw or Berlin “- he warns.

In this text we write “in Ukraine” instead of the phrase “in Ukraine” to which we are used to. For years there has been a debate as to which form is more appropriate and carries a greater charge of respect for nations (if we say “in France”, “in Switzerland”, why say “in Slovakia” or “in Ukraine”?). Some linguists emphasize that the use of “w” is not linguistically incorrect and depends basically on the will of the speaker or writer.
