Two days after the Russian attack on Ukraine, Roskomnadzor issued regulations that explicitly forbid the media to describe the aggression of Putin’s troops with terms such as “invasion”, “declaration of war” or “attack”. The only information allowed for publication in Russia about the war in Ukraine is that from the official communications of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Publishers have been instructed to write about a “special operation” to protect Russian-speaking people in eastern Ukraine. The penalty for non-compliance with the regulation is blockade.

Many TV and radio stations have not complied with the bans of Russian censorship. Independent Novaya Gazeta reported that Roskomnadzor ordered her to remove an article that violates the regulation on how to report on the war in Ukraine.

Six days after the start of the war in Ukraine, the Russian prosecutor general also ordered “restriction” to the Dozhj channel and radio Echo of Moscow. The reason is the alleged “deliberate and systematic” publication of information “inciting extremism and violence” as well as “deliberately false news about the activities of military personnel” in Ukraine. Soon after the ordinance, the websites of these broadcasters were no longer available, and Alexei Vieniediktov, editor-in-chief of Echo of Moscow, confirmed on Telegram that the radio had been removed from the antenna.

Roskomnadzor has even introduced restrictions on the speed of Twitter, because the platform does not remove information about Putin’s military movements, which is false, according to the Russian bureau.

Blockade of Russian media

Meanwhile, Meta (Facebook) and Google first disabled the Russian state media from the possibility of earning money from advertising, and Microsoft did the same, which also blocked RT applications from its app store. The next step was to block the accounts and profiles of pro-Kremlin broadcasters on Facebook and Instagram. In addition, there was also a blockade of posts with links to the websites of these media. Google blocks channels such as RT and Sputnik from its news sites, and the same is happening on YouTube.

Since the beginning of March, Twitter has been displaying content and messages related to the Kremlin and its favorable media on its websites. On Monday, it was reported that 45 thousand people visit there daily. tweets with links to Russian propaganda tubes.

The traffic tracking function in Ukraine in Google Maps and Apple Maps also does not work. The AP agency reports that even Chinese TikTok blocked RT and Sputnik accounts in Europe.
