More than 1,000 writers including the British Salman Rushdie, the canadian Margaret Atwood and the Nobel Prize for Literature Orhan Pamuk and Svetlana Alexievich they expressed solidarity with Ukraine and called for an end to Russia’s invasion.
In an open letter published late Sunday by the world writers’ association PEN International, the authors said they were “dismayed by the violence unleashed by Russian forces in Ukraine” and launched an “urgent call to stop the bloodshed.”
“We are united in condemning a senseless war, caused by the refusal of President (Russian Vladimir) Putin to accept the right of the Ukrainian people to discuss their future direction and history, without interference from Moscow,” the authors wrote in the letter, also published in Russian and Ukrainian.
In the message – to which the journalist Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Prize also adhered – the signatories pointed out that they are united to “support writers, journalists, artists and all the Ukrainian people, who are living dark hours”. (I)
