Brian Cox, who played the doyen of the family in the TV series “Succession”, was selected to receive the statuette and deliver a speech at the gala. After thanking the other creators of the show, he handed the award to Kieran Culkin and took his phone out of his pocket. – I would like to mention one more matter important for me and – I hope – also for you – he began. – It’s really, really terrible what is happening in Ukraine. Also how all this affects other people – I mean those in our profession – he added, mentioning that the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, was once a comedian himself and went an amazing way from performing on stage to politics.
Brian Cox: They are forbidden to say anything about what is happening in Ukraine under the threat of high treason
Cox continued, touched:
The thing that really bothered me is what is happening in Russia with my fellow actors and actresses, artists, writers and critics. They are forbidden to say anything about what is happening in Ukraine under the threat of high treason. I find it awful. I think we should get up now, also for those people in Russia who don’t agree with what is happening – especially the artists – and support them, hoping they can make a change. I believe they can do it.
