Ukrainian director from a shelter in Kiev: We need your support
Worożbyt was just finishing making another film called “Demons” – there were only four days left to close the shoot. She was working with the film crew in Mirgorod when Russia attacked Ukraine from various fronts. Airplanes, tanks and army squadrons invaded the country, and the airbase in Mirgorod was one of the targets of the attack. The filmmakers managed to get out of there before the Russians entered, and the director herself found refuge in one of the air raid shelters in Kiev. From there, he also gives interviews using Zoom, he reports.
The creator is not sure of the fate of her project, but is determined to finish it:
Many people are leaving, but I have decided to stay. Being here is very important to me. Being Ukrainian inspires and stimulates me. I will only leave the country if the Russians take control of it. Unless of course I can.
Natalia made her debut writing plays in Russian, now she writes mainly in Ukrainian, which is her conscious political choice. Translations of “Bad Roads” (translated by Anna Korzeniowska-Bihun) and the play “Majdanu Journals”, translated by Agnieszka Lubomira Piotrowska, have been published in Polish. Her debut film was very well received in the film community and is recognized by critics. In an interview from the bunker, she emphasized, however, that its subject matter made it difficult to reach the public with him.
“Many people did not want to watch it because it sounded too traumatic for them. I had to explain that it really was happening in the East of Ukraine, that the enemy is very close, that the enemy wants to destroy us. In fact, the real situation is even worse than in my film. many people did not even want to accept it “- describes the reactions of viewers.
Worożbyt also hopes that people who watched or see her painting will feel motivated to act for Ukraine:
You can go to protests, you can talk about it, you can call on your governments to lobby for stronger sanctions. There are special collections where you can support the Ukrainian army. If people decide to leave Ukraine, you can give them shelter. Unite action against Putin’s aggression. Don’t believe his propaganda. We need your support.
The “Demons” she is currently working on is another adaptation of her play. It tells about the relationship between a Russian and a Ukrainian – “In a way, this story reflects the troubled nature of the ties between these countries,” says Natalia. And he emphasizes that making a movie at this point is not a top priority:
If you were a Ukrainian artist now, you wouldn’t want to talk about anything other than war. We may dream about our future productions, but I’m pretty sure they will still be about war.
