Stars in Russia against Putin. “It’s a crime and a catastrophe”
Miron Fedorov, known as Oxxxymiron, is a rapper, former executive director of the Booking Machine booking agency and co-founder and former member of the Vagabund label. Over two million people follow him on social media. On Thursday afternoon, Oxxxymiron posted a three-minute video on Instagram explaining why he had decided to cancel sold-out shows in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
“I know most people in Russia are against this war, and I am convinced that the more of us talk about our true attitude towards it, the sooner we can stop this horror,” said Oxymiron. As an inspiration, the rapper referred to the American protests against the Vietnam War. “This is a crime and a catastrophe,” he stressed. Oxxxymiron added that in such circumstances he would not play the aforementioned concerts. – I cannot entertain you when Russian rockets are falling on Ukraine – when the people of Kiev are forced to hide in bases and subways, when people are dying – the rapper said.
Thus, Oxxxymiron joined the group of Russian stars who condemned the actions of Vladimir Putin. The comedian and TV presenter Maksim Gałkin, who hosts one of the popular talent shows on state television, wrote: “There is no excuse for war, I say to war: no!”.
Singer Valeri Meladze, who is Georgian by origin, said: “What happened today could not and should not have happened ever. I am calling for an end to hostilities and the start of negotiations.” Socially involved rock singer Zemfira has published a short entry with the slogan: “Not for the war”. According to Pitchfork, his opposition was also expressed, among others, by hip-hop band Kasta.
Grassroots protests against the war between Russia and Ukraine are taking place all over Europe, including in many Polish towns. Russians who protested in 55 cities also took to the streets. Most people gathered in Moscow, where the officers detained as many as 1,000 people. About 400 demonstrators were arrested in St. Petersburg.
