Sally Kellerman, an actress with a distinctive voice, known for her Oscar-nominated role as US Army Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s M * A * S * H, died Thursday morning at a Woodland Hills care facility after battling dementia. Kellerman also played an unforgettable role in the third episode of “Star Trek” entitled “Where No Man Has Gone Before”. She played the role of Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, a Starfleet officer aboard the USS Enterprise. As Dehner sacrifices her life, her last words to Captain Kirk (William Shatner) are “I’m sorry … you can’t know what it’s like … to be almost a god.”
Kellerman was born on June 2, 1937. Many fans also remember her role in the 1986 comedy “Back to School”. She also worked with Robert Altman, the director of “MASH”, on the productions “Brewster McCloud” (1970), “The Player” (1992), “Pret-a-Porter” (1994) and the episode of the anthology “Gun”. She also sang – she released her first album (“Roll With the Feelin ‘”) in 1972 – and dubbed.
Loretta Swit played the major role in “MASH”, which was based on the film. The only actor to appear in both the full-length and episode versions was Gary Burghoff aka Walter “Radar” O’Reilly.
Sally Kellerman married writer and director Rick Edelstein in 1970, but the marriage did not survive. In 1980, she married producer Jonathan D. Krane, with whom she adopted twins Hannah (died in 2016) and Jack.
