The greatest popularity brought him the role of the lead singer of the band Screaming Trees, of which he was a member from 1985 to 2000. In the years 1994–1995 he was the vocalist of Mad Season, and in the years 2000–2014 he worked with the band Queens of the Stone Age. He has also performed (also in Poland) with his own band, Mark Lanegan Band. He has published poetry and has published two autobiographical books.
Screaming Trees was one of the more important bands in the Seattle grunge scene, formed by groups such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. He described his friendship with Kurt Vobai in his 2020 diary entitled “Sing Backwards and Weep”. Like Cobain, Lanegan was a drug addict. It was only after the death of Nirvana’s singer, under pressure from Cobain’s wife Courtney Love, that he finally went into rehab in the late 1990s. In 2020, he had a hard time suffering from COVID-19. He spent several weeks in the intensive care unit, he had to be put into a pharmacological coma. He described his struggle with the virus in the book “Devil in a Coma”, which was published in December last year.
