Icy devices require defrosting. A large layer of ice means that the refrigerator uses more energy, and it is getting harder and harder for us to open the drawers. When it’s time to clean, we want to do it relatively quickly without unnecessary mess. We will suggest how to practically start defrosting a cooling device.
Why should I defrost my freezer and how often?
Consider what are the reasons why refrigeration equipment needs to be defrosted. Where does the moisture in the freezer come from? There are two ways, one is for storing food and the other is by opening the refrigerator door frequently. Accumulation contributes to the formation of ice layers. With time, there is such an amount that it makes it difficult to use, for example, drawers. In addition, the device needs more energy to maintain the correct temperature. This results in higher power consumption. It is worth defrosting the freezer regularly every six months so that the device works efficiently and serves for a long period of time.
What to do with food while cleaning the freezer?
Before defrosting the freezer, it must be completely drained of the contents. Before this activity, it is worth starting to use your supplies a few days earlier. However, if there are any products left, we can store them in a cool room or in a container with ice cubes. It is best to defrost the device on one of the winter days, when the temperature outside will be below zero.
How to defrost a refrigerator quickly and without a mess? Step by step
- Before you defrost the fridge / freezer, turn the temperature knobs to zero.
- Then turn off and disconnect from the power supply.
- It is worth protecting the protruding cables from being soaked by water.
- Open the freezer door, the ice will start to melt. The ice layers will start to peel off. Then it is worth regularly removing the water bearing and wiping the walls of the device, e.g. with a sponge.
- If the accumulated water is more than expected and the sponge is not enough, we can place a bowl on the bottom of the device.
- Then remove any movable parts from the refrigerator.
- Wash the removed parts with warm water and washing-up liquid.
- When the ice is gone, start by washing all the sides of the device and wiping them dry.
- Then close the refrigerator door.
- Turn on the equipment when the device is dry.
