It is preceded by the remnants, ie the last week of the carnival. It starts with Fat Thursday. How were the remnants in various parts of Poland celebrated and what were their names? On a fat Thursday, no sweets were eaten. Sometimes herring was king.
When is Shrovetide 2022? Fat Thursday will start soon
The remnants of 2022 fall on Tuesday, March 1st. Right after them. Before the scraps arrive, however, the last week of the carnival will start on a fat Thursday. Sweet snacks are almost a signal that you can start having fun, which will last for several days. During this time, clubs, discos and pubs organize various events, and sometimes shopping centers and restaurants abound in promotions.
Remnant 2022: traditions. Customs vary by region
The remnants have had different names in the past. As they were celebrated all over Poland, they were accompanied by various traditions. In most cities, the feast was feasted while drinking strong drinks, usually alcoholic. In the villages, feasts were held in taverns and barns. The fun ended when a boy … with a fish skeleton entered the room. Fish is a symbol of fasting food. Thus it was proclaimed that Lent was about to begin.
In Wielkopolska and Kujawy the remnants were called “goat-goats”. This holiday, however, was more like a bought night than the well-known remnants. This is because the symbol of the goat was also supposed to be a symbol of licentiousness and amorous joy. It was believed that upon prior acquaintance, on that day it was possible to decide who would become a spouse in the future. On the tables there were figurines of a goat with clearly emphasized attributes corresponding to a given gender.
In Kashubia, as in many Polish villages, the remnants were associated with herring. The so-called the “herring” that heralded the coming 40 days of fasting. They feasted at long tables with the herring on it, but accompanied by vodka or moonshine. Whoever refused to play that day was hit with herring. They feasted both in taverns and in houses.
When is Fat Thursday 2022? The date of each year is different and depends on Easter
Last year’s fat Thursday was covered with the remnants and it fell on 11.02. This year, however, is different. we celebrate February 24 and it has to do with Easter, which also has a different date than a year ago. Fat Thursday is the last Thursday before Lent, so the day must be exactly 52 days before Easter. Most often it falls between January 29 and March 4.
