Zinegoak will give a voice to people “who struggle to be who they are”

Zinegoak, the Bilbao Gaylesbitrans International Film and Performing Arts Festival, “will give a voice to people who struggle to be who they are” and this year in its 19th edition will return to the official feature film section divided into three categories: DOK (documentaries), FIK (fiction) and KRAK (new narratives) and will premiere two new cycles of short films.

In total you can enjoy 16 feature films and 22 short films in the official section. The feature films will be screened at the Golem Alhóndiga cinemas, and once the face-to-face screenings are over, they can be viewed in the digital window that Zinegoak maintains on the Filmin platform. The shorts will be screened for free at Bilborock.

All the films in the official section will compete to win the Zinegoak Grand Prixthat this edition will feature the EITB sponsorship and will have a value of 4000 euros.

EITB will offer live both the Opening Gala and the Closing Gala to be held on March 7 in Bilborock, where the rest of the awards will also be announced.

The artistic director of the Festival, Alaitz Arenzana, the director of production, Pedro Andrade, and the person in charge of communication, Julen Nafarrate, presented this Monday in Bilbao the official program for this edition to be held from February 28 to March 7 in several rooms in Bilbao.

One of the objectives of this edition of Zinegoak has been maintain attendance, “to be able to enjoy cinema and culture in situ”, Arenzana assured. “We want Zinegoak to once again be a meeting place to enjoy culture and diversity”, she added.

Furthermore, this year Zinegoak will once again receive visits from international filmmakers and juriesafter last year’s break.

Zinegoak will be visited by filmmakers such as Isabelle Solas (Nos corps sont vos champs de bataille), Reka Valerik (Silent Voice), Adrián Silvestre (Sedimentos), Tim Leyendekker (Feast), Noel Alejandro (KRAK jury), Cecilia Montagut (DOK jury), the actress Susi Sánchez (FIK jury) or the Argentine filmmaker Albertina Carri, who will receive the ZG Honorary Award at the festival’s Opening Gala, which will be held on February 28 at the Arriaga Theatre.

The festival will feature various themes that will be addressed in several films, such as “violence and refuge” or HIV and the social stigma that still exists in our society.

As far as short films are concerned, in addition to the usual cycles of “Women Directors” and “Childhood/Adolescence”, Zinegoak will have two new cycles: “Loving polyhedrons”, about the different formulas of affective-sexual relationships; and “Transitions”, with the focus on trans realities. In total, in the official section they will compete 22 short films and will be screened for free at Bilborock.
