Małgorzata Sokołowska has been working in the police since 2005. On Instagram, she runs a profile from a policewoman’s diary, which is followed by over 50,000 people. In one of the recent posts, Sokołowska referred to nightly returns from parties. She started her entry with the fact that she knows that everyone likes to meet with friends and have fun. After the end of the event, however, a safe return becomes a priority.
Do you think about it before the party or do you assume that it will somehow be there?
The policewoman described the story of her return home. The party she was at ended around 1am. Sokołowska had the choice of returning by subway, taxi or car ordered through the application for transporting people. In the end, she decided to choose a taxi, even though it was the most expensive of the three options.
You probably think I’m wasteful now. None of these things. Professional experience has taught me to minimize the risk. I like to go crazy and live spontaneously, but ALWAYS within reason and with safety rules.
The commissioner also shared with her observers five tips that will help in a safer return home. The policewoman advises that:
- Ask your friends to stay overnight or to come back together if you don’t feel up to it to go home alone.
- Do not fall asleep when returning by taxi or by car ordered through the application.
- Call 112 and call a person you trust if you are concerned about something during the journey (e.g. unjustified change of route). He encourages you to report any comments about the driver in the application after the trip.
- Remember as many details as possible (person’s appearance, clothes, car registration, etc.) in the event of a rape or other dangerous situation. The information will be useful in arresting the perpetrator.
- Ask the taxi driver to wait for us to enter the house / block safely. The policewoman admits that she always does this and that no one has ever refused her.
There were a lot of comments under the post by Małgorzata Sokoowska. Some added their advice and described what they always do when they return home at night.
When I come back late, I don’t have headphones, I don’t listen to music then.
I would like to add that a very nice option is to share the data of the trip / location with a trusted person during the trip.
Some people also pointed out that they regret that such posts are still needed and that you cannot just feel safe. “Don’t you think it’s abnormal that we always have to be careful, we always have to take the correction, we always have to watch out?” – wrote one of the commenters.
