‘Respirar’, the first single from Jesse & Joy’s upcoming album: ‘The power that forgiveness gives you is knowing that there are second chances’

Mexico City, Guayaquil and Punta Cana were the settings for this interview. We don’t travel (we would like to), but technology has allowed us to connect with Jesse & Joy to talk about its recent premiere Breathe, simple that serves as an appetizer for his next record production. Through the Zoom screen, two small windows allow this Diary to share with this artist duo. Jesse Huerta, with a colorful background of palm trees (real of course) while having a coffee accompanied by his wife in a sunny Punta Cana, connects with his sister Joy, who was at her residence in Mexico City, pausing to his family intimacy to reveal details of his current release and his next concert tour Cliches.

Breathe It is a song initially written in English and that came to light after eight years, at the moment that both coincided, it was the precise moment to sing it to the public that has followed them for almost 17 years of career. The song was composed in London and months ago they rewrote it in Spanish so that it would be integrated into the track list of his new album.

The single has been composed by Jesse & Joy, led by Martin Terefe, a Swedish producer and composer who has worked with artists such as KT Tunstall, Shawn Mendes and Rita Ora, among others, and where they also added the work of the composer, producer and british singer, Cass Lowewho has collaborated with other singers such as Chance the Rapper, Fifth Harmony and Clean Bandit.

Breathe it is a letter of forgiveness turned into a song that you can easily identify with. How many times have we wanted to apologize to that person we love so much, but we couldn’t find the words? That is precisely what they have achieved with this song, where through the musical talent of Jesse fused to the incomparable voice of Joythey ask that other person to stop fighting to remember what they were like before the relationship changed.

In part of the letter Breathe They say that they do not seek perfection, although most in real life try to do it, when, individually, did you prefer to be real before perfect?

Jesse: I think it was at the moment that we realized that the more honest we were with ourselves, at least translating it to our music, people connected with that honesty and we realized that we coincided in certain moments and experiences of seeing the music. lifetime.

Joy: Well look, I think it’s something that also gives you life, like we go through different stages in life and in age, in which we want all this perfection to feel that we have this belonging that as human beings we are born lacking, no, the to belong. And there comes a point where you say whether I belong or not, my happiness is more valuable and being genuinely as I am, and it’s nice when that moment is reached, because you truly find happiness, you find fullness, and curiously, that’s when things they begin to align in a better way, and when will it have happened? I don’t know, a few years ago. The truth is that it is very nice to say, we say in Mexico, the path that others want is okay, mine is this and it is incredible.

Pablo Alborán presents ‘Castillos de arena’: I believe that love is the only thing that moves things

What have been the moments of happiness that have taken your breath away and allowed you to ‘breathe’ as you really wanted?

Jesse: For me, in addition to the moment I met my wife and we had our daughters, seeing that through doing what I love the most, which is music, and seeing that through one thing that I love to do, they have eaten, grown up, of something that you cannot touch, as such, something intangible but still touches the heart, touches lives, that is something that steals my breath, that has managed to steal my breath (he says excitedly while his wife saw him).

Joy: Yes, there are many things, I think my family also takes my breath away in a good way, because they take my breath away. There have been many moments in our lives, the fact that we do what we love so much, that we can do it day by day and call it a job, takes your breath away every time you stop for a second and think about it, every time we announce a tour, every time we announce a new song, they are also moments that take our breath away but because of nerves, it is the emotion and anxiety of sharing with all the people. And there have been ups and downs in our careers that have taken our breath away at times, so that we want to surface and breathe a little bit, however, I think for better or worse, all of those experiences together have made us the people that we are today and I am grateful for the person I am today, because I am aware of wanting to be a better person every day and that came thanks to all those experiences.

If love moves everything, and Breathe is a letter of forgiveness musicalized, what is the superpower that is received when forgiving?

Jesse: The superpower that forgiveness comes with is the knowledge that there are second chances and not only towards other people but towards oneself, that you can always start over.

Joy: And to breathe, I think that is the great message, that one behind forgiveness finds that he can breathe again, because sometimes the lack of it can take away your oxygen, and not necessarily from a person, second or third, sometimes it is something you need for yourself, for yourself.

After surviving a pandemic, do you prefer a fairytale love or a life without so many stories?

Jesse: I believe that a life without so much story, because within that could include a love of fairy tale. I have my wife here next to me while I give all the answers, so she is watching me (laughs)

Joy: How difficult, well look, I’m going to tell you, I live both, because I live a fairy tale and I live a life without so many stories, although it’s not on the beach like Jesse is, but it’s a very nice place, yes.

Jesse: But you know what? I don’t need the beach because I have your eyes (referring to his wife). Why do I want a beach if I can see the sunrise (they kiss in the middle of the interview while Joy tells her daughter that she is still working)

Breathe It is your first preview of the album, what will be the next novelties or surprises of your album? When would the album be released?

Jesse: The album has a little bit of everything, and at the same time one hundred percent of Jesse & Joy, each album we love to surprise our people and at the same time find that intermediate point of surprising them, or that from the first chord, without sounding like clichés of us ourselves or regurgitations of what we have done previously have that identity and that essence and at the same time we surprise them by risking everything with new sounds and our essence, but putting from the depths of our essence, of our biculturality, of what we grew up listening to, of our individuality, and at the same time all that mixed, boom I fall in love, and boom you dedicate it.

Mon Laferte: If love is not to have a good time, it is useless

How long have they been working on the tour cliches And after how long do they return to the stage?

Joy: Well, our last concert, which was on tour, was at the end of 2019, so we have also been holding our breath since then to be able to see each other and share, because as you know it came out Air, an album that we couldn’t tour, but we are sure that as things improve it will be worth it. I mean, if it was up to Jesse and me, we would have announced every possible date by now. But for the benefit of all the people we love, which is the family that makes up Jesse & Joy, we want to do it in the most responsible way possible and we are slowly announcing it.

Is Ecuador planned?

Jesse: The tour is being prepared, we are doing it in the most responsible way, both for ourselves and for our families and those of our work teams and our fans, now we start in the United States, in March and April, from there to Mexico and from there we will continue announcing and Ecuador is also in our hearts.
