There is no doubt when he starts singing “So let’s have a party like no one has survived. Let the neighbors pound, pound, pound, pound on the door …” it’s hard to stop, you have to go through the whole chorus. It just works like a slot machine. How do you deal with such a legend? Błażej Król turned out to be the right man for this task. A new interpretation of a rock classic strikes with freshness and lightness.
The party anthem of the People’s Republic of Poland returns in a carnival edition
In the texts of the Closed Unit, you can feel a youthful rebellion, expanding energy and disagreement with reality outside the window. It was 1983 and Poles needed to somehow react to all that was bad, and there was no lack of bad then. When they heard the lines “Seven days has a week and each of these seven days, if not Saturday, everyone would be the same”, they understood that someone felt their frustration, he can put it into simple, universal words, maybe even a bit infantile, but at the same time original, thanks to the form and music.
Since the premiere of this single, no one has managed to write another so thrilling and memorable song about the party. “Party” was more than just a party anthem, it was a rock “protest song”, which despite everything was also devilishly catchy and easy to sing. It’s not easy to deal with the original interpretation of a piece that is remembered by the audience. Fortunately, Błażej Król is not afraid of any challenges. A little prompted by the founders of the Przyjaznestwa brand (Janusz Palikot, Kuba Wojewódzki and Tomek Czechowski), he prepared a cover of “Party”, which no one has ever heard before.
The king, who was only a year old in 1983, ironically:
I remember well the summer of ’83, a hot July to be exact, when as teenagers, together with Janusz, we listened to a song by Oddział Closed and we joked that someday we would make a cover of this song. Life surprised us once again and I will only say this – be careful what you dream about, because dreams do come true, but not always when we expect it.
Janusz Palikot adds:
It is true that I am a year younger than Kuba Wojewódzki (laughs), but I remember the 1980s perfectly. I met the Closed Branch shortly after graduating from high school. Behind the windows there is a crisis, apathy and black despair. It was easier to stumble across a tank than a bus. For us – young, rebellious, the song “Party” was like a revelation, a revelation to the West. We had an undying heat in our heart, and great music was accompanied by a mean entourage. Today, Poland has caught up, and has overtaken the world in many spheres, including the one I deal with professionally. Yet we still carry the same disagreement and rebellion in our hearts. Hence, as soon as the idea was born to go back to the 1980s and bring back the emotions of those times with the brilliant Błażej King, I did not think even for a second. It is worth keeping the whole world spinning, even if you can sometimes fall over.

Fun turns him on
The king likes to play on stage, he also likes to play with music. He long emphasized that he was “too lazy” to learn someone else’s lyrics, he also doubted that he would have any fun performing someone else’s songs. And yet, he tried it and he did not regret it. In an interview for Kultura.gazeta.pl from 2020, he admitted: “As a recipient, I am more likely to return to things I know, but because I do not know them by heart, I build and understand them anew. This new perception turns me on.” He also stated then: “We have not all graduated from music academies. Music is listened to primarily with the heart and I think it is beautiful”.
This heart and artistic defiance can be heard in his fresh, very carnival interpretation of a rock classic. There is no need to hide, the carnival Anno Domini 2022 needs a new melody that will allow to discharge the accumulated energy, and at the same time – to discover new musical horizons.
Błażej Król was born on February 9, 1984 in Gorzów Wielkopolski. He was recognized for his activity together with the Kawałek Kulki alternative music band. Then there was the UL / KR duo with Maurycy Kiebzak-Górski. Their debut album from 2012 “UL / KR” was very warmly received. In 2014 he started his solo career with the album “Nielot”. In his solo career, the musician uses his surname as an artistic pseudonym. Together with his wife Iwona, he also creates the music duo Lauda. Their joint music differs from the King’s solo career – instead of alternative rock, the spouses serve a decent dose of experiments with electronic music.
