“Green Planet”. A new nature adventure led by Sir David Attenborough
The first episode aired on February 13 on BBC Earth took viewers to tropical forests. Next Sunday, February 20 at 11:00 am, the next part of the series – “Underwater World” will have its premiere.
In the second episode of the “Green Planet” series, Sir David and I discover the world of aquatic plants, from Croatia to Brazil, from Colombia to Thailand. They create some of the most beautiful and important habitats on earth. During the flowering period, aquatic plants behave like terrestrial plants for some time, exposing the flowers to the air on stiff stems. Only one flowering plant has reached the sea and forms underwater communities – seagrass. Its submerged savannas not only support a huge amount of animal life, but also absorb carbon dioxide 35 times faster than tropical forests. Now threatened, they are crucial in the fight against climate change.
The “Green Planet” consists of five parts, and in each episode we learn about a different group of plants and the secrets of their survival. The expedition is guided by Sir David Attenborough, and the program is his great endeavor born out of passion and comes out at a critical moment, when our green world is on the brink of collapse. By watching the series twenty-six years after the release of “Private Life of Plants”, we can see how our understanding of plant behavior and interactions has developed, but also how technology has progressed.
The premiere of “Green Planet” was seen by the participants of the COP26 climate summit, which took place at the turn of October and November 2021 in Glasgow. – It is good that the program debuted at COP26 and I am glad that I could be there to see it with the audience. Over the years, plant life has been largely ignored when we talked about climate change. As viewers will find after watching our series, the green ecosystem is the heart of all life on Earth, so it is so important that we face biodiversity and the climate crisis together, commented Sir Attenborough.
The next episodes of “Green Planet” can be watched every Sunday at 11:00 on the BBC Earth channel until March 13. Replays of the episodes are broadcast on Sundays at 20:00.
