Agencies. mestizo memories is the title of the exhibition in which the Afro-Andalusian artist Carla Hayes Mayoral (Málaga, 1997) questions the colonial past of Spain and Europe, from an identity inquiry.
Based on the combination of a material as characteristic of African culture as raffia and visual references from the Western collective imagination, Hayes Mayoral displays a mestizo and neo-baroque installation that subverts the notion of a space of power. Theatricality and astonishment at the wonder of his apparently aesthetic execution lead to the deconstruction of the hegemonic narrative.
The exhibition brings together a total of nine works installed in the exhibition room on the first floor and in several rooms of the permanent collection, where his creations dialogue with works by old masters such as Rubens, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jacques Linard, and Frans Hals. Born in Torremolinos in 1997 and a researcher at the University of Malaga, Carla Hayes adds her Ghanaian origin and her feminism to break down stereotypes of colonialism and give a leading role to the woman of the time.
“The exhibition begins with black slavery in Spain and goes to my own identity and personal history,” declared the artist.
