Eusko Ikaskuntza will award this year the Manuel Lekuona Prize, dedicated to recognizing the total work of personalities of Basque culture, to Jon Bagüés Errionda, according to the one announced this Tuesday morning.
Bagüés (Errenteria, 1955) studied Philosophy and Letters in San Sebastián and specialized in Music History at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he received his doctorate in 1990 with the thesis Music at the Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country.
Later, for twenty years (2000-2020) he directed the Basque music archive Eresbil.
Among the merits that, in the jury’s opinion, the awarding of the Manuel Lekuona Prize highlights his work in favor of the Basque musical heritage from the most diverse facets. “Jon Bagüés has made possible the recovery of works by composers and has favored their dissemination. Likewise, he has helped active composers and promoted the creation of musical study and performance entities (such as the Peñaflorida Chapel, dedicated since 1985 to research and dissemination of early music) His professional work has been remarkable in the Basque Music Archive – Eresbil and in the organization of the Basque Music Week in Errenteria, Musikaste “.
They have not yet announced when and where Bagüés will receive the sculpture by Remigio Mendiburu that symbolizes the award that since 1983 has been received, among others, by Manuel Lekuona himself, Bernardo Estornés Lasa, Xabier Diharce “Iratzeder”, Jorge Oteiza, Micaela Portilla, Piarris Charriton , Jean Hartschelhar, Menchu Gal, Montxo Armendariz, Soledad de Silvay Verástegui, Joan Mari Torrealdai, Xabier Amuriza and Jose Ramon Etxebarria.
