PiS will donate a work of art to Hungary for PLN 25 million? The Kuyavian-Pomeranian council protests

Law and Justice MPs want to hand over to Hungarians a 15th-century manuscript, which has been in the collections of the Provincial Public Library – Copernican Library in Toruń for over 400 years. However, this idea is not liked not only by the Society of Toruń Lovers, but also by the voivodeship councilors.

The assembly of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is against the handover of the manuscript to Hungary

During the XL session of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship council, councilors decided to refer to the draft act assuming the transfer of the 15th-century Corvinus Code to Hungary in order to strengthen Polish-Hungarian cooperation. The library would receive PLN 25 million in return.

“Danetta Ryszkowska-Mirowska, the director of Książnica Kopernikańska and Prof. Janusz Tandecki, chairman of the Library’s Scientific Council, expressed a strong objection in this matter. Strong opposition to the parliamentary bill, obliges the voivodship marshal to strive for the bill to be rejected by the Sejm and to ask the minister of culture and national heritage to intervene in this matter “- we read in the report from the session of the regional council, which took place on Monday, February 7.

In the appeal issued by councilors, we read that they express “their deep concern” about the matter, and the code is “one of the most valuable 15th-century manuscripts” in Poland.

Receiving the manuscript of the Copernican Library will be a loss for the heritage of the institution itself, as well as for the city and the region, which cannot be compensated by financial compensation in any amount.

– emphasize the councilors.

Handing over the 15th-century manuscript to Hungary. The Society of Toruń Lovers is against it

The information about the project “with regret and indignation” was also received by the Society of Lovers. “This unique manuscript was written around 1490 in Florence, where it was also given a beautiful illuminating robe, visible in the photos below. Its author was the Italian humanist Naldo Naldi. The work is a poem praising the magnificent” Bibliotheca Corviniana “- the library of the Hungarian king Matthias Corvinus, which it was given as a gift from the author. The royal book collection was gradually dispersed after the conquest of Hungary by Turkey. In the 16th century, the Naldi code, probably through the Sultan’s court in Istanbul, was sent to Toruń “- we read in the society’s appeal, which expresses” firm opposition “against the idea of passing the code over to Hungary.

PiS wants to hand over the 15th-century manuscript to Orban

In February last year, they handed over to Poland, free of charge, the ownership of the children’s armor of King Sigismund II Augustus, which is located at. Hence, the handing over of the code would be a form of “reciprocating a gesture of friendship”, as well as a way to “further strengthen and develop the centuries-old tradition of friendship between the Polish and Hungarian nations,” as we can read in the bill introduced by PiS MPs. .
