Washington Black is an adaptation of the novel by Esi Edugyan. The action takes place in the 19th century and tells about the adventures of George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy from a sugar plantation in Barbados, who has to escape after a traumatic event. Brown will play the outgoing, attention-grabbing Medwin Harris who helps the black community in Halifax, where at one point “Wash” is hit.
“Titch” is an eccentric and passionate inventor whose youthful enthusiasm masks his inner sensitivity. A disturbing death on his family’s sugar plantation sets Christopher on an extraordinary journey with young George Washington “Black” by his side. Tom Ellis’s protagonist is crammed into the position of Washa’s mentor and guardian – a role he is not prepared for.
The cast also includes Ernest Kingsley Jr. as Washington Black, Eddie Karanja as Young Washington Black, Iola Evans as Tanny Goff, Edward Bluemel as William “Billy” McGee and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Miss Angie.
Sterling K. Brown and the novel’s writer will also be involved in this production as producers.
