We celebrate Fat Thursday in Poland 52 days before. This is called Shrovetide, that is the beginning of the last week of the carnival. Both Poland and Germany celebrate this day in the same way – richly packed tables with goodies, that is simply overeating. Fat Thursday is not the same in every country. Some parts of the world celebrate the so-called Sweet Tuesday and eat pancakes instead of donuts. The Russians, on the other hand, celebrate this holiday for a week! 2022 is February 24. In previous years, it was February 11, and before that, February 20. The holiday is movable because it depends on the Easter holiday. The tradition appeared for the first time in our country in the Małopolska region. Fat Thursday was then called the combo Thursday. According to legend, the name comes from the surname of the 17th century Krakow mayor named Comber, who is probably a fictional figure, a man bad and strict with women who have their own stalls and traded in the Krakow market. He just died on Fat Thursday, which made the inhabitants happy and made them feast. Another tradition says that this holiday comes from a pagan tradition during which the end of the carnival was celebrated in Rome. Then, in order to “eat up” before the upcoming fast, fatty dishes were prepared, incl. donuts filled with … meat.
Fat Thursday is also celebrated on Tuesday! Who and how is celebrating then?
In France, the so-called “Fat Tuesday” also known as “Sweet Tuesday”. Contrary to Poland, they rather avoid eating faworków or donuts with sweet filling. The French celebrate this day by eating pancakes and especially. This is a unique type of pancakes in a delicious orange syrup. They also prefer waffles on this day. The Brits also celebrate “Pancakes Tuesday”. Pancake Tuesdays are also popular in Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Who is celebrating Fat Thursday the longest? The feast, however, only lasts from Wednesday
In Russia, it lasts by far the longest. It begins on Monday with a grand celebration, but also with a meatless fast. The tables can only be set on Wednesday and then the real feast begins. It lasts until Sunday, and then begins the religious preparations for the holidays.
