Supercines El Dorado (17:00, 19:10, 21:20):
A perfectly normal family (2021, 93 min.). Country: Denmark. Direction: Malou Reymann. Spanish subtitles. A woman has a perfectly normal family … until the day her father claims to be transgender. As he becomes Agnethe, both father and daughter struggle to hold onto what they had while accepting that some things have changed.
The film, the debut of the filmmaker Reymann, tries to delve into the emotional ups and downs that an experience of gender transition represents for a family group. The award-winning drama in Rotterdam, which takes place in 2000, takes as its point of view a girl who suddenly comes across two pieces of news that shake her. In a family talk, her mother announces to her and her older sister that she will be separated from her father since he has decided to become a woman. His sister seems to be able to deal with him a little better. shock, but for the girl it is a blow that seems difficult to overcome.
The film portrays the existence of families that go through situations of this type. These are not simple changes for those who live it in the flesh, nor for those around them, but they are transitions with which they coexist more and more in societies. And even with its problems, this Danish film helps to normalize them. The title may seem ironic at first. But “the joke” is finally that it is not.
Supercines Ceibos (18:45), with cinema forum:
Another Round (2020, 116 min.). Country: Denmark. Director: Thomas Vinterberg. This film opened the festival in Quito. The story of a group of teachers who decide to do an experiment: to maintain a level of alcohol in the blood permanently throughout the day to see how the consequent tipsiness improves their daily life.
Award-winning filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg (Celebration, The hunt, The commune) has always been interested in the functioning of closed human communities, authentic pressure cookers whose explosions he delights to show audiences through his films and this –One more round (title in Spanish) – won the Oscar for best foreign film and was also nominated for best director at the same award ceremony held last April. And, leading the cast, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen managed to win the Silver Shell for best performance in San Sebastián.

What burns (2019, 89 min.). Country Spain. Direction: Oliver Laxe. Nobody waits for Amador when he gets out of jail after serving a sentence for having started a fire. He returns to his home, a lost village in the Lugo mountains, where he will live again, at the calm rhythm of nature, with his mother, Benedicta, his dog Luna and his three cows.
Since his directorial debut in 2010 with You are all captains (You are all captains) -winner of the Fipresci of the Cannes Critics’ Fortnight-, Oliver Laxe managed to walk that difficult path that connects nature, the tangible, with metaphysics. The filmmaker follows closely, but without melodramas, the relationship between a mother and her son, based on an atavistic and unappealable love, and the attempt to reinsert a renegade into the society to which he belonged, but who is now suspicious of him. vice versa? Amador distrusts his neighbors and the neighbors distrust him in a kind of fragile loop that could easily catch fire. The film documents the day-to-day life in a Galician village, the relationship of its inhabitants with nature, animals, scarcity, cold and traditions.
