“Whose name day is today?” – we still ask ourselves this question very often. Is it really so important to celebrate the name day? Many people only celebrate birthdays up to a certain age. It happens that some people finish celebrating them after they turn 18, other times 25 or 30. Later, first of all, name days are celebrated. Certainly the impulse to celebrate them is having a popular name. It often happens that friends accost Adam, Sylvester, Krystyna, Barbara, Paweł or Piotr in order to wish them all the best for their name day.
For some, the name day is of special importance. Let us not forget that the custom of celebrating the name day was and sometimes is related to the veneration of a saint or blessed patron, and has been adopted where the influence of the Catholic Church and some other Christian denominations was particularly strong. In addition to Polish lands, the name day is also celebrated in, but also in the Czech Republic, Russia and Bulgaria.

How are the name-day calendars to the birthday? Sometimes the problem is that the calendar has many days dedicated to one name. This is explained by the multitude of saints or blesseds who had a specific name. Believers often choose the date that directly concerns their patron. However, it is often customary to observe the name day at the earliest possible date after the birthday. So if, for example, the name Piotr appears in the calendar many times, then we choose the name day just after the birthday.
