“This album is an excellent starting point for Floreana, who although at times has sudden mood declines”.
Pablo Vázquez (voice), Sebastián Ordóñez (guitar) and Guillermo Arévalo (synthesizers, keyboards), are the ones who make up the group from Cuenca Floreana (@floreana__), which orbits in independent national music since 2018 and after singles like Shapes, Chimera Y Fly, publish their first studio album, entitled Paintings.
Available on digital distribution platforms since last Friday, this production, made up of ten songs and lasting approximately 32 minutes, is developed around a traditional sound indie and a structure attached to the pop. At the same time, it tries to associate itself with a friendly aesthetic, typical of the aforementioned genres.
pictures will start with the topic Takotsubo, which marks a good guideline of what will be the auditory path of this work for the most part; guitars with slight modulation effects, a bass line firmly taking the rhythm and subtle keyboard harmonies that do the job of transmitting a cosmic atmosphere. Of course there are changes within this mechanism and Canopus it is a sample of them; acoustic guitar and samples of what looks like a phone call whose main participant is fragments of a statement by Argentine musician Pity Álvarez, leader of legendary bands like Viejas Locas and Intoxicados.
The indie tour ends between multiple layers of voices and drum machines in the song nothing is going to be wrong, a kind of hopeful message that can be applied to any adverse situation, thus managing to reconcile with the listener.
From my perspective, this album is an excellent starting point for Floreana, which although at times has sudden mood declines, can be heard from start to finish without problems. It also has the excellent musical production of Bernardo Arévalo and a cover by Fernando Idrovo Guillén, both complementing the identity of the band.
New independent musical proposals continue to emerge in 2022, thus shaping up to be a year in which creativity and innovation will be important factors for national artists.
