T.LOVE’s “Torch” lit up. They come back in an iconic line-up and with new energy

Yes Yes! The T.LOVE crew in 2022 celebrates its 40th anniversary. There will be two cherries on the cake, because this year is also the 30th anniversary of the album “King”, recorded in the cult line-up with Janek Benedek (the creative duo Muniek & Janek earlier flashed under the watchful listening of the late Robert Brylewski with the album “Pocisk miłość”) and with Jacek Perkowski (guitar), Paweł Nazimek (bass), Jarek Polak (drums). To this day, many music critics consider “King” to be the best Polish rock album of the 1990-2000 decade.

Muniek, Janek and the team are back together again. “You have to get up from your knees and do something”

Soon after “King” was recorded, the mentioned line-up broke up in a turbulent atmosphere. What made them team up again? – In 1992, we were all young, uncompromising and everyone had their own ambitions. When I left T.LOVE, I felt as if I was abandoning my own child, because this is how I treated that material – says Janek Benedek. – Interestingly, I later did a lot of joint songs with individual musicians from the line-up, for example for Muńek’s solo album, or Sidney Polak’s projects, and even for the T.LOVE album “I Hate Rock’n’Roll”. The wounds slowly healed… but entering the same river a second time is a big deal.

Benedek emphasizes that many people still consider him to be the person responsible for giving T.LOVE a specific musical direction. – Our first work with Muńek, “Pocisk miłość”, turned out to be revolutionary for those times, so everything that happened next was simply painful – recalls the composer. – When Muniek asked me to come back, I had mixed feelings – on the one hand, this is an occasion to do something really extra, because we know that good songs come out of us – and this is a very strong feeling, we both realize it, and on the other hand you think – what will it be ?! A dangerous thing, but… it’s okay.

Muniek Staszczyk explains how the album entitled “Hau! Hau!”, Which will be released on April 22, came about:

Even before my illness, I thought about working with Janek again, we even managed to meet, but 2019 passed on my efforts to come back to the living, and then in 2020 this plague struck, and with it, like many people, depression caught me. It all started when Janek threw a CD with five of his compositions and a ‘call to the nation’ (laughs) in my mailbox, which he recorded with an electric guitar backing: ‘Munio, we’re not going to commit collective suicide, we have to stand up off your knees and do something, anyway or because it is what it is. ‘

– We all remember how it was. Everyone stayed locked in the house and fell more and more into himself. I remember that among those five songs there was a track called “I Love You” on the album, and it made a big impression on me then. So big that I wrote a text to him right away. And this moment was my wake up again and, at the same time, the beginning of our second, common life – emphasizes Staszczyk. – I am very proud to work with Janek again, that we managed to complete it all, and I was excited about the year 2022! This album is an attempt to return to mental joy and I hope that it will be perceived by people that way.

“Woof woof!”. Lots of emotions on the upcoming T.LOVE album

An album with a graceful but perverse title “Hau! Wau!” he is the first to promote the single “Tortern”. – It is definitely a love song, but from the canon of T.LOVE. Based on impressions from my life, my travels, my point of view – says Muniek.

– From the beginning, Jan and I felt that a nice girl should sing here, so we invited Kasia Sienkiewicz from the Kwiat Jabłoni band to cooperate with me, because earlier I got their hands on their album and I really liked what and how they play. Only then did I not know that they were so popular! The bonus turned out to be the fact that Kasia and Jacek are the children of Kuba Sienkiewicz, whom I like very much. Kasia not only sang her parts in this male-female dialogue, which is the best girl-woman, but also danced very sensually in the clip – encourages Muniek and adds: – I think that this fusion will appeal to everyone. The whole thing reminds me mentally (not musically) of one of The Cure’s older compositions, “Friday I’m In Love”, but let me point out right away that in my opinion, well-written songs about male-female relationships never get old.

– And for me, “Torch” reminds me of Maanam, maybe because of the chill of guitars in choruses, a bit of The Smiths, it has such wry melodies and the introduction is a bit kitsch, but catchy – adds Benedek. – On the other hand, what happens in the verses and the chorus is a reference to the best rock traditions of the 80s. In addition, Kasia introduces a fantastic atmosphere with her voice, a masterpiece for me. Thanks to her, this issue gains poetic depth. Jacek, Kasia’s brother, is also involved here, because he plays solo on the mandolin. The song has lots of layers, lots of tracks, it was complicated to mix but… it became the first single! I believe that I deservedly.

The clip for the single “Tortern” was directed by Marta Kacprzak. There are many elements referring to pop culture, fragments of archival films, also in the old-modern line-up: Muniek Staszczyk, Janek Benedek, Paweł Nazimek, Jacek Perkowski and Sydney Polak. Muniek says that much of what inspired them, what they love was shown here. He sings here that he has seen Dylan and the Stones live, and the fact that the music video was made in the Warsaw club “Stodoła”, i.e. the second house of T.LOVE, sums up that he can no longer looking forward to gigs with material from the new album!
