Polityka Passports 2021 – watch live
The director received the first statuette of the evening Aleksandra Terpińska. She was awarded in the category film for the adaptation of “Other People” by Dorota Masłowska. From the stage she said:
I find it very difficult to enjoy this award in a country where the most basic rights are taken away, where LGBT + people are harassed, where children are denied the opportunity to call for help, and where people die at the border. It would seem that Polish history and the Polish nation that has gone through so much will be able to understand these people. It turns out otherwise. In my film, I tried to look at people with tenderness and understanding, and it seems to me that today this skill needs to be trained even more.
Dominik Strycharski received the award in the theater category. Speaking from the stage, the artist was extremely moved. – I believe that art, culture, music, theater, film are places where we can meet and do something together, do something good together and not kill each other in the process, part and then get to know each other on the street . It moves me because I imagined that such a world is always around us, that we make this world of culture for ourselves, but not only for ourselves, we also do it for people outside. And I always hoped that what we do gets beyond our walls, that people take this energy from the stage, from the concert, from anything, carry it further and that way maybe we will have some influence … – he says, adding later:
I do not know if we have, I would like to delude myself that we do, and I am not sure that it succeeds, because what surrounds us is the last six years … we know how it is … I can say for my part: I will not stop, I will do it for the rest of my days.
In category visual arts for the first time in the 29-year history of the awards, two ex aequo awards were awarded. They got them Jana Shostak and Mikołaj Sobczak. The former invited those gathered at the gala to a minute’s shout for Belarus, and earlier said:
Today I am wearing a dress of 1,200 portraits of political prisoners, unjust hostages of the Belarusian regime.

Mikołaj Szostak referred to the words of his predecessor and co-awardee. – I hope that this shout will be a shout not only to Belarus, but also to all our friends without whom we were absent and to all those who supported us. All I can say is thank you, he said.
A prize in a special category remote culture they received Małgorzata Płysa and Mat Schulz, founders of Unsound Festival.
Polityka Passports 2021. Jerzy Baczyński from the stage: welcome to independent Polish culture in the still free media
The Polityka Passports gala was hosted by Grażyna Torbicka with the editor-in-chief of the magazine, Jerzy Baczyński, who welcomed him and said:
We both welcome independent Polish culture to the still free media.
Earlier in the several-minute summary of the year, it was about politics – and the words of curator Barbara Nowak about “Dziady” in the Krakow theater, placing the works of John Paul II on the reading list by the Minister of Education, the activities of Jacek Kurski on TVP and the organization of the concert “Wall behind the Polish uniform” and about the activities of the Minister of Culture himself:
Piotr Gliński was very busy with the personnel issue, he replaced the management of Zachęta, he also chose a new director of the National Film Archive, under whose rule almost a third of the staff departed in a few months.
For the second time in a row, cash prizes will be awarded not only to the winners of Polityka’s Passports, but to all nominees. – It was another season in Polish culture devastated by the pandemic. Therefore, for the second time in the history of Polityka’s Passports – thanks to the support of our sponsors – we award financial prizes to the nominees in all categories, the organizers explain. All nominees will get 10,000. PLN, and the winners 20 thousand. zlotys. – Polish culture is doing quite well without the Ministry of Culture, which is increasingly becoming an element of culture supervision – said Baczyński.
