The theory of the disk is on display until January 29 at Espacio Onder (230 Mendiburo and Baquerizo Moreno, 2nd floor).
Extractivism in the Ecuadorian jungle and fabrics in the city of the Andes are themes that Oscar Medina proposes as a hypothesis in his exposition The disk theory. The artist, known as Azpeger, exhibits in onder space until January 29.
“The puse The disk theory because, for example, if you ask someone what shape a disc is, they will tell you that it is a circle, but if you look at it from one side you will see an oval and on the other side you will see a line. So, basically it is that, playing with what is seen and with what is told about what is seen”, explains the guy from Guayaquil, who has made his life in Riobamba.
Eleven works in total, including objects, paintings and an installation, are exhibited in the gallery. For his work he uses unconventional materials, such as acrylic plates, ventilation pipes, silicone rubbers and fuses them with acrylics and spray.
“Since I am talking about fabric, I did not want to resort to wool or yarn, or to fibers that are already designed for this purpose, but rather to understand that yarn and wool are cylindrical shapes, which can form a structure”, maintains the artist, who uses his knowledge in graphic design to achieve works with three-dimensional finishes.
Objects introduced from the observation of their environment. “There are things that happen spontaneously that catch my attention… About five years ago, when I visited my family in Guayaquil, my uncle had made a temporary air conditioning installation in my brother’s room, and then I saw I take a look at this material and it caught my attention”, he comments.
That was how, after asking his uncle for a couple of tubes and then buying others, he began to play with them to investigate their texture, lights and sounds. The first time he used pipes as an artistic installation was in an exhibition in Riobamba.
He says that the incorporation of these materials has led him to an exploration in which he discovers new things every time.

“It is the need to be involved in creative processes… It speaks of the desire, which is always there, to be investigating and getting involved with new techniques or new ideas. Art is like a very wide and very free medium where one can always find new things. It’s that sense of newness”, Explain.
He says that he has been painting since 2008, but for approximately three years he has been developing this graphic. “I’m still investigating her, I’m still investigating her, because I think she still has many things to exploit or there are many points of view from which they can be approached…”says the 31-year-old artist.
The disk theory It is exhibited until January 29 at Espacio Onder (230 Mendiburo and Baquerizo Moreno, 2nd floor). Visiting hours are from Tuesday to Saturday, from 14:00 to 18:30. Free entry. (I)
