The creator of the netflix “The Witcher” bursts: This is exactly what the series is about. Why does this seem so hopeless?

The second season “” has been in the forefront of the most watched English-language series for a month now. The new series arouses a lot of emotions among viewers. The creators decided to introduce a lot of changes, they approached the adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and stories in a very original way. As Henry Cavill put it, an ode to the world created by a Polish writer was created. Many people are dissatisfied with the fact that the show has taken a life of its own, and that the script is more responsive to the dynamics of the story, rather than reiterating what can be read in books or seen in games – although it is in fact consistent with the message. Andrzej Sapkowski. One of the people who publicly criticized the new “The Witcher” is Youtuber TheQuartering, known for its conservative views.

The creator of the netflix “The Witcher” broke

TheQuartering, that is, Jeremy Hambly, announced in a Twitter entry that, in his opinion, Henry Cavill’s potential was completely wasted in the second season of “The Witcher”. “Geralt has been pushed to the second and third plan of his own show because it’s … Netflix. The writers are so obsessed with pushing through strong female characters who don’t need men that they ignore what most of us want to watch.” he developed a YouTuber who had apparently never read Sapkowski’s books. The writer repeatedly emphasized in interviews that he modeled his protagonists after women he really knew, which made them independent, causal and ambitious characters.

The showrunner from “The Witcher” takes the issue of keeping in touch with Geralt’s admirers very seriously. She replied to Hambly’s entry in short words that she was the “strong, independent woman whom he should blame for his grief.” This is how a longer exchange of opinions and a conversation about the series began, during which Hissrich culturally, but firmly emphasized, among other things, that no one is forcing her to do anything while working on the production and that the script only contains what seems reasonable to her. The conversation also turned to the subject of tolerance, issues related to diversity and the multicultural key to the selection of the cast of “The Witcher”.

More than once, viewers have negatively commented on the decision to play elves by black people etc. in the series. Hissrich noticed that, as a woman and fantasy lover, for a long time she could not find characters in pop culture that she could identify with, because such stories were told for white men for a long time. As the person responsible for the adaptation of Sapkowski’s book, she wanted to make as many people as possible feel represented in the world of “The Witcher”, although she also realized that the assumption would be that since the author is a white European, all heroes will also they must look like that.

She also emphasized that when adapting a novel, it is worth taking advantage of the possibility of creating various points of view. The more so because in “The Witcher” itself, it was always about tolerance – in the books it was presented on the example of various mythological races of heroes: elves, halflings, dwarves etc.

Although Hissrich tried to conduct the conversation in a polite manner, many people began to point out to her that by conducting this type of discussion, she herself was contributing to the spread of intolerance. They argued that many actors and admirers may feel downright humiliated by posting online recordings explaining to “bigots” why the cast is multicultural, although “not all are satisfied with it” because she graciously thought it was important.

Lauren S. Hissrich took these remarks to heart:

I started an unexpected conversation, and since then I’ve been learning more and more about the harm I’m doing to the fan community. Let’s be honest, The Witcher is all about tolerance. Yet it seems hopeless. Let us live. Let’s be polite. Why is it so hard?

In response, she received a graphic illustrating the paradox of tolerance described by Karl Popper, philosopher and author of the important book “Open Society and Its Enemies”.

In short, it is about the fact that intolerant people must not have the right to tolerance. If they are free to act, I will hurt those they do not tolerate – thus the principle of tolerance will no longer work. As Tadeusz Zieliński pointed out in the text for the weekly, a similar thought was expressed in the book “One hundred superstitions. A short philosophical dictionary of superstitions” by prof. JM Bocheński from Freiburg: “Tolerance that tolerates its own enemies cannot stand”.

Moved by this example, Lauren S. Hissrich wrote: “The wise stranger made me realize that my entries had become a form of intolerance. I asked my observers to be tolerant, and immediately started talking about bigotry or hate speech – things that I would not tolerate myself. on your side “. Therefore, the producer decided to suspend all discussions on Twitter. She stressed:

I am so sorry to those I have hurt. I believe we need dialogue with those they disagree with, but Twitter is definitely not the space to do this. The world cannot be changed in 280 signs and it cannot be changed when people are not safe. I’m sorry I didn’t see it.

She thanked her for being drawn to the mistake she had made and stressed that she was aware that she still had a lot to learn. She also added that all conversations will be conducted in private messages. From now on, only information about “The Witcher”, photos of the anchors and her children will appear on the producer’s profile. She also added that from now on, thanks to Karl Popper, her tolerance is at a limit, so “don’t be hateful assholes.”
