In breaks from being filthy rich, they conspired against each other. “Dynasty” is a television legend

American audiences saw “The Dynasty” for the first time on January 12, 1981; the series was broadcast for eight consecutive years, with 220 episodes produced during the course of this period. Just when production ended, “Dynasty” arrived in Poland. The great popularity of the Carringtons’ adventures in our country is evidenced by the fact that they inspired, for example, the creators of advertisements. We still remember the slogan: “Coffee without Completa is like ‘Dynasty’ without Alexis”!

As it used to be in “Dynasty”, when viewers would like too much

The most famous and probably the most expensive soap opera tells the story of two rival families: the Carringtons and the Colbys, millionaires from Denver, Colorado. They live in beautiful mansions, drive Rolls-Royce’s, and in their spare time from being filthy rich, they drink expensive spirits and, of course, plot against each other. Happening, oh, going on.

The head of the Carrington family is Blake. His second wife and ex-secretary is Krystle (Linda Evans). From his first marriage, Blake has a daughter, Fallon (Pamela Sue Martin) and sons Adam (Gordon Thompson) and Steven (Al Corley); the latter is uphill with his father because of his sexual orientation. Let us add that he is an important figure because he was portrayed as a handsome, nice, sensitive and honest guy, in total opposition to the socially negative image of a homosexual man at that time.

Steven appeared on television in 1981 as the HIV / AIDS pandemic was unfolding. The idea seemed so risky it was intriguing. Al Corley was hired for the role, and he took his task very seriously. He considered Steven’s performance to be groundbreaking and felt that it was he who could significantly influence how viewers would perceive gays. There was no question of exaggerated gestures and inappropriate behavior. Unfortunately, neither the audience nor the producers were convinced. Screenwriters have been requested to … heal Steven of his orientation. And that probably was the reason why Al Corley left the cast at the end of season two.

In “POPKultura Extra” we will tell you not only about it, but also about about the budget for costumes, about the birth of the cult character Alexis, played flawlessly by Joan Collins, and about “the meanest cliffhanger of all time”, which the creators of “Dynasty” served to viewers at the very end of the series.
