Architect Ricardo Bofill dies at the age of 82

The renowned Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill has passed away this Friday in Barcelona. He was 82 years old. Born on December 5, 1939, he trained as an architect at the ETSAB and the University of Geneva and has created around a thousand works in 40 countries.

Bofill was an architect of international projection and long career in the field of architecture, design and urban planning.

His urban design works include the Place de l’Europe in Luxembourg, the New Castilian of Madrid, the Antigone neighborhood in Motpellier (France), the Nueva Bocana of the port of Barcelona or the remodeling and expansion of the airport of the Catalan capital, where he also projected the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya and the Hotel Vela.

Ricardo Bofill It stood out from its beginnings for questioning the dominant thought in architecture. From this philosophy a huge production arose, very varied in its stylistic forms, which sought to adapt to the environment and maintain a strong component of innovation and risk.

Bofill founded the Taller de Arquitectura in 1963 with a multidisciplinary team formed not only by architects, but also by other professionals and artists, such as the literary critic Salvador Clotas, the poet José Agustín Goytisolo or the economist Julia Romea.

That transversal spirit is maintained today, with his two sons, Ricardo Emilio and Pablo, who have been in charge of the office for some years now, who lead a team of more than one hundred professionals of thirty different nationalities who are currently developing numerous projects.
