Each of us does grocery shopping and probably all of us have noticed that everything has become more expensive. There is a lot of talk about the fact that inflation has increased drastically, but politicians keep telling us that everything is leveling out, because the minimum wage has also increased. Well, I’m not an economist and I don’t know much about it, but I can see how much money I’m spending on grocery shopping in supermarkets and I’m downright terrified. I recently visited one of them to do some grocery shopping like every week. I paid PLN 243.47.
Someone will say that it is not much, but I paid much less for a similar one a few years ago. I decided to carefully trace my receipt and look for the most expensive products. They were: clarified butter 21.99 PLN, butter 6.99 PLN, Gouda cheese in slices 11.49 PLN, cream cheese 4.69 PLN, oat flakes 5.89 PLN, half a kg of chicken 10.22 PLN, meat minced pork and beef 9.99 PLN. In addition, I bought yoghurts for children, milk, rice, a few protein bars, fruit mousses also for children, bread, canned beans, sausages, a few spices, potatoes, fresh spinach and a few other products. Why am I replacing them? I want to show you that there is nothing “luxury” on this receipt, all these are products that each of us buys every day.
We are a family of four, so ours should always be filled with wholesome products. I buy most of my vegetables and fruits in local greengrocers, as well as cold cuts, so if I also add these products to the supermarket cart, I would end up spending about PLN 300.
I must add that such purchases usually last us for 4-5 days. Later, I go back to the supermarket and spend the same amount or more. I don’t even want to count how much we spend on food per month. What is certain, however, is that if inflation continues to rise, then soon yellow cheese or butter will be luxury goods, and these are products that we usually put in the basket first. I know that I am not the only one who is spending so much money on shopping. We often exchange observations with friends or other parents and I don’t know any person who would say that what is happening is ok. I don’t even want to think what people feel now, who will not be able to afford a decent life right now.
Finally, quoting the classic, I ask: “Mr. Prime Minister, how to live?”.
