The police in Opole are in a spot. Horst Zeiger is a seemingly retired young man, an outsider and a computer geek. Until she suddenly takes hostages – teachers and children – and locks them up at school with them. If he only said what he wanted, there was hope that he could be stopped from killing by giving what he asked. But he doesn’t speak. Instead, he launches a website and broadcasts on it, during which he organizes a kind of games of death.
Can the internet be brought to justice?
Horst Zeiger knows very well that many things can be done with the internet, both good and bad. He has long noticed that people deluded by apparent anonymity and a sense of impunity on the Internet show their worst side.
They express some – seemingly even innocent – opinions under photos, recordings or articles, but sometimes their comments are full of venom, hate and words that they would never say in the face of someone. Pato-influencers during streaming can encourage viewers to self-harm or harm others. “You do not dare”, “give, give, they will be added” – they say and do not understand how much their words translate into reality.
Zeiger takes advantage of this and starts a macabre game. On his website, he tells people to choose who he will kill: a sick girl or a well-liked teacher with many years of experience? A respected elderly doctor or a young boy who, under the influence of alcohol, hit and killed children? The Internet in his hands is a murderous weapon. After all, everyone uses a telephone, many do not feel responsible for what they do online.

What Horst’s watchers do not know, however, is that when he talks about his victims, he manipulates the facts so that they are interpreted according to his expectations. The scandalous viewers forget that they do not have the full picture of the situation and only hear what the kidnapper wants to convey to them. They think they are choosing, or maybe they are saving someone. After all, this is a classic moral dilemma: how to choose whose life is more or less valuable? Who or what gives us the right to make this choice? Is it possible to make such a decision fairly? How to choose who is to live and who is to die? They actually dance as Zeiger plays for them. Thanks to this, he feels power over human life, which also gives him intoxicating excitement.
The policemen working on the kidnapping case call for help – he is a specialist in kinesics and body language science. He has a unique ability to read human motivations from even the smallest gestures and grimaces. He was once a successful prosecutor, but he made a mess of it. He was fired from a job he loved after, convinced he was right about someone else’s fault, planted fake evidence. He has never recovered from this incident and finally has a chance to return to what he loves the most – investigations.
However, regardless of what Edling does, Horst seems to be completely immune to his actions – he perfectly predicts each next step of the former prosecutor. Moreover, the murderer is fascinated by Gerard, whom he respects in his own twisted way. And this makes him an even more dangerous opponent: how to defeat someone who can wreak havoc, manipulate people, use the Internet efficiently and know who he is playing the murderous game with?

Gerard Edling has no easy task: not only because the opponent knows his methods so well. But also because more and more people are watching their gruesome duel in which innocent victims are dying.
