For over a dozen years, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a solemn Eucharist has been held in the Wawel Cathedral combined with the rite of the consecration of virgins, attended by women belonging to the state of virgins of the Krakow diocese. During the last ceremony, the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Krakow, Robert Chrząszcz, consecrated and added two more women to the state of consecrated virgins.

At the moment, there are over 360 consecrated virgins in Poland, most of which (53) come from the diocese of Kraków, where another 18 are already preparing for the rite.

Who are consecrated virgins?

Consecrated virgins undertake to keep their virginity throughout their lives, dedicating their lives to prayer and service to the Church. However, they are not obliged to live together – unlike religious sisters, they live and work in the secular world.

Consecrated virginity is the oldest form of consecrated life, which dates back to the first centuries of Christianity. The tradition of dedicating one’s heritage to God was known already in antiquity. Before women were allowed to enter the order, many decided to enter the state of virgins.

Over the years, however, this rite was abandoned and returned only after eight centuries of break, in 1970. The first Polish woman to take the solemn wedding of chastity in 1991 was Zofia Prochownik.
