Oscar 2022: 15 movies to watch out for in the awards race

There are several rare pieces in the possible Oscar contest in 2022.

It is difficult to talk about cinema at the moment without mentioning covid. The virus has had a significant impact on movie theater audiences as well as release patterns.

But as always in show business, the awards show must go on somehow. And there are several exceptional pieces in the possible Oscar contest in 2022.

So here are 15 movies worth watching ahead of the Academy Awards in late March.

1. Belfast

What is it about? – This semi-autobiographical film from director Sir Kenneth Branagh is a story about raising a child in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Who stars in it? – Jude Hill, Jamie Dornan, Ciaran Hinds, Caitriona Balfe.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Strong across the board with nominations for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Performance probably as well as Best Song for Van Morrison Song “Down To Joy”.

Kemmeth could also become the first person to be nominated in seven different categories throughout his career. He already has nominations for director, actor, supporting actor, adapted screenplay, and live action shorts.

If it earns nominations for Best Picture and Original Screenplay for Belfast, will set a new record (not counting Walt Disney, who was nominated at a time when the rules were somewhat different).

Where can it be seen? – In Venezuela it will be released in the billboards in January, while in other Latin American countries it will be in theaters from March.

2. West Side Story (“Love without barriers”)

What is it about? – It’s a Steven Spielberg remake of the classic musical about rival New York street gangs and the love story of Tony and Maria.

Who stars in it? – Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort.

What are your chances of Oscar? – With the cast singing and dancing, the film could land multiple major nominations, including best picture, director for Spielberg and actress for relatively new star Rachel Zegler.

Plus, 90-year-old Rita Moreno, who won best supporting actress in the original 1961 version, is probably the favorite to win that award again, this time for playing a new character named Valentina.

Where can it be seen? – It is already on the billboards in Latin America.

3. The Power of the Dog (“The power of the dog”)

What is it about? – Is a western dark in which a rancher cruelly torments his brother’s new wife and son.

Who stars in it? – Benedict Cumberbacht, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smith-McPhee.

What are your chances of Oscar? – One of the best-reviewed films of the year, it seems certain that it will get nominations for best film, adapted screenplay and in the acting categories. Only seven women have been nominated in the best director category, but Jane Campion is likely to become the first woman to be nominated twice, the first time forThe Piano(“The piano”) (1993).

Where can it be seen? – Netflix.

4. Licorice Pizza

What is it about? – It is a story of a first love set in the San Fernando Valley of California in the 1970s.

Who stars in it? – Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Bradley Cooper.

What are your chances of Oscar? – You have a high chance of getting nominations for best picture, and Paul Thomas Anderson is likely to get nominations for best director and best original screenplay.

Alana Haim, so far better known as the youngest member of the pop rock group Haim, could also be recognized in the category of best actress.

Where can it be seen? – In Ecuador and Costa Rica it is already in theaters, in Uruguay and Argentina it will be available on January 20 and 27 respectively, in Venezuela and Chile in the first week of February. It will arrive in Mexico on March 17 and in Colombia on February 17.

5. King Richard (“King Richard. A winning family”)

What is it about? – It is a biographical drama about Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.

Who stars in it? – Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Will Smith has never won, but has been nominated twice before for But YThe Pursuit of Happyness (“Looking for happinessy “Ali”). This time it looks like it could be his third time, as many predict it is Smith’s shot at best actor. The film is also likely to be nominated for best picture.

Where can it be seen? – It is already in the cinemas of Latin America.

6.Dune

What is it about? – It is a new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel about the son of a noble family and his role in protecting the most valuable substance in the galaxy.

Who stars in it? – Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya.

What are your chances of Oscar? – It seems that it is going to the nominations for best film and best director for Denis Villeneuve. It may continue to be one of the top nominated films overall, thanks to recognition in many technical categories including cinematography, production design, score, and visual effects.

Where can it be seen? – It was released in theaters last October. Available on HBO Max.

7. tick, tick…Boom!

What is it about? – As he approaches 30, a struggling theater composer reassesses his life and future.

Who stars in it? – Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Probably for Garfield in the category of best actor; and in the best picture category, which has been expanded to ten guaranteed nominations in 2022.

Where can it be seen? – Netflix.

8. House of Gucci(“The Gucci house”)

What is it about? – When Patrizia Reggiani marries a member of the powerful Gucci family, she desperately wants to make an impact on the famous fashion brand controlled by different members of the dysfunctional family.

Who stars in it? – Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Al Pacino, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Lady Gaga has a chance in the category of best actress, while Jared Leto may end up nominated in the category of best supporting actor. However, nominations for best picture and best director for Ridley Scott seem unlikely at this stage.

Where can it be seen? – On the billboard since November.

9. Spencer

What is it about? – Follow Princess Diana as she spends Christmas with the royal family in Sandrigham while her marriage to Prince Charles continues to unravel.

Who stars in it? – Kristen Stewart, Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall.

What are your chances of Oscar? – While the film is far from making a universal sensation, there has been high praise for Kristen Stewart’s performance as the Princess of Wales, and she is probably the favorite to win the Best Actress Oscar. Behind the scenes, nominations are also a possibility in areas like production design and costume design.

Where can it be seen? – In movie theaters from January.

10. The Lost Daughter(“The dark daughter”)

What is it about? – A woman enjoying a summer vacation begins to obsess over another woman and her daughter, experiencing echoes of her own past.

Who stars in it? – Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Former Oscar winner Olivia Colman has a good chance of being nominated again for best actress. And Jessie Buckley could sneak into the best supporting actress category.

The film could appear in the category of best film. Maggie Gyllenhaal is likely to be nominated for best adapted screenplay and could become the eighth woman to be nominated for best director.

11. Don’t Look Up (“Don’t look up”)

What is it about? – Two astronomers embark on a global media tour to warn the planet of a comet hurtling toward Earth.

Who stars in it? – Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep.

What are your Oscar chances? – The film is chock-full of Oscar talent among the main cast, including stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Meryl Streep, not to mention the supporting roles of another pair of Oscar winners, Cate Blanchett and Mark Rylance.

None of them seem likely to get nominations this time, however, and the film’s best chances are for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay for Adam McKay, who won an Oscar for Adapted Screenplay in 2016 for The Big Shor (“The big bet”).

12. Coda

What is it about? – Ruby is the only person who is not deaf in her family, she is a “coda”(Daughter of a deaf adult by its acronym in English). He wants to study music, but he also feels like he has to help his parents with their struggling business.

Who stars in it? – Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur.

What are your chances of Oscar? – Your best chances of an award seem to go to Troy Kotsur in the category of best supporting actor and to Sian Heder in best adapted screenplay and best film. Emilia Jones is also an outside possibility for a best actress nomination.

Where can it be seen? – Amazon Prime in Latin America as of January 7.

13. The Tragedy of Macbeth (“The tragedy of Macbeth”)

What is it about? – It is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s play about a lord convinced by three witches that he can become King of Scotland with the support of his ambitious wife.

Who stars in it? – Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Kathryn Hunter.

What are your chances of Oscar? – For the previous double winner Denzel Washington represents his biggest opportunity in the category of best actor. But for triple winner Frances McDorman, it seems unlikely she will add a fourth award to her career this time around.

Where can it be seen? – Date to be confirmed in Latin America.

14. Being the Ricardos (“All about the Ricardo”)

What is it about? – The film tells the relationship between the stars of the classic American comedy of the 50s I Love Lucy, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Who stars in it? – Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, JK Simmons.

What are your chances of Oscar? – The Academy has long been a huge fan of Aaron Sorkin’s writing, nominating him multiple times. On this occasion, it seems almost certain that it will be nominated for best original screenplay again, but as has happened in the past, it seems unlikely that it will be recognized for its direction.

On the other hand, the award-winning Nicole Kidman has a great chance of being nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Lucille Ball.

15. No Time to Die (“No time to die”)

What is it about? – It is Daniel Craig’s last film as James Bond, where he faces a deadly villain in the most emotional adventure of the saga.

Who stars in it? – Daniel Creig, Lea Seydoux, Ana de Armas, rami Malek, Lashana Lynch.

What are your chances of Oscar? – It is very unlikely that you will get nominations in the main categories, but it is possible that you will get some in certain technical areas. The previous Bond movie, Skyfall, won (or shared) best sound editing in 2013.

The biggest possibility of the movie is that of the best song. Adele won by Skyfall and Sam Smith for Writing’s on the Wall fromSpectre. Billie Eilish seems to be a favorite with No Time to Die, which would make it a triplet of Bond songs won.
